Fullmer stated in an interview with Pete Heller for his book "IN This Corner",that he beived he was responsible for Parets death ,and spoke about his regrets.

I think in this case the powers that be were promotor Jack Curley.

I have only seen highlights of this fight, but if he fought aggressive without pacing himself too well then i think that was a good choice. There was no way he's gonna out-last a that much younger, perhaps stronger and durable challenger. His only chance was an "early" knockout.

One that I am glad was never filmed-

    Sam Langford vs Brad Simmons

Langfords manager begged him to retire when he started to go blind and abandoned him in a desperate atempt to make him see sense.

Langford would have none of it and continued boxing untill he was technicaly blind and after, even scoring some good wins like over Tiger Flowers. Langford could not retire because he knew nothing else.

When Brad Simmons blasted the blind 44 year old Langford in one round he finaly acepted reality and retired.

That would be a horible fight to see.

I was heartboken when Tyson lost to Lewis. When Mike had a good first round & Lewis was doing a lot of holding, leaning on Mike, I was screaming for at the tv for the ref to stop all the holding.

I badly wanted Tyson to win. Throughout the buil-up, we heard how Mike had trained solidly, his weight was down, he was focused, had sparred many rounds etc.

However, when Tyson weighed in, any thoughts I had of him winning the bout were nearly all evaporated. Tyson weighed 16st 10lbs, at least 14lbs above his fighting weight.

Yet Bruno and his camp were prepared to take the money a Tyson fight got them. You put yourself in a position to be shot out, you have to accepet you may get hit. Bruno was a disgrace that night, not just to his country, but to the sport and all the professionals who have honoured it in the past.

History will (quite rightly) be kind on Bruno's career, and the demons of that night in 97 will fade in time, but it is still a raw nerve to some of us...

Yes, and something overlooked in the whole Paret affair is that this was the devout Fullmer's final win. He lost his title in his next bout, against the older Dick Tiger, several months after seeing Benny die. As great as Tiger was, something had to have been taken out of Fullmer, who didn't have the sort of style which could support a loss of aggression.

I'll second that. The stoppage must be the best KO of all-time.

    Jerry Quarry v. Ron Cranmer

That Jerry felt the need to fight this guy for $1000 and get his teeth broken and even more mentally damaged was sad.

Brunos camp and Bruno were happy to take the money but the crucial diference is tha Bruno probably did not know the reality of what he was agreeing to when he signed the contract.

He would have been thinking in a total fog and not have known that he was.
