Heavy Bag Critique

    This is me hitting the heavy bag today

    I am wearing 14 oz gloves with 180" ringside wraps. The bag is 100 lbs with 50 lbs at the bottom holding it down so it doesn't move.

    I haven't hit the bag in a month. This is my 3rd round and I messed up my shoulder in the 2nd round. The camera is at an odd angle so my stance looks really narrow for some reason.

    Leave any helpful comments and ways I could gain more speed/power using my bag.

    You have pretty decent form and variation (double-jab, 1-1-2, body hook followed by a cross, double body hook and right uppercut - that's a pretty solid foundation to what seems to be your go-to arsenal). You seem pretty consistently responsible about keeping your hands in defensive position in between salvos.

    The main critiques I'd have for you are that you 1) could work on your breath control, as you visibly inhale after throwing your 1-2 sometimes, tilting your head back and involuntarily lowering your guard, leaving yourself vulnerable for a moment when you could easily remedy this by evening out your breath so that it remains constant while moving and punching so you didn't have to suck wind after sitting down on a combination...and 2) you telegraph your right hand sometimes, drawing it back for what I'm guessing is extra torque when you'd be served better just delivering it nice and short & directly on the heels of your jab to guarantee its chances of landing and, ideally, landing unanticipated with the jab serving its avowed purpose of setting up & blinding your opponent to what's next. :good

    First off, thanks for all of the advice I'll use it. Second, I think when I was tilting my head back it was me trying to look at my computer screen at the timer because I was trying to do interval training of 30 seconds hard then 30 seconds medium but I said fvck it to myself at some point.

    You lift your elbow when you jab and when you throw your right hand. Every time. When you do that an opponent knows what you are going to do as soon as you do. Plus it breaks the line of the body and thus costs you force.
    When you throw your left hook the weight stays on your left foot; to properly throw that punch the weight moves onto the right foot. This enables you to turn your hips through the punch, so you are using your whole body and not just the left side of it.
    This is why you are throwing that wide swinging right hand instead of driving it. When you throw a right hand the weight goes from the right to the left foot; you keep it on the left foot.
    If you spend some time learning to transfer your weight properly you will punch faster- and you are quick as is- and harder. Your balance will be better- those little wobbles, you know? And you will improve your wind because swinging your arms takes more energy than turning your body.

    I was going to write exactly the same they told you. Your main problem is that you telegraph your hits, with jab and right hand, both. Telegraphing like that you will never hit an experienced boxer. Work on that.

    Only one thing more, there is too much time between your left hand and your right hand in your 1-2. You are like 1...2, it should be 12. The sound should be 'Papam' and not 'pam pam'.

    Over all, you're doing very well. Much better than I expected, actually. :)

    Thanks everyone for all of the tips, I will definitely work on not telegraphing my punches and shifting my weight properly. I should have posted a video a few months ago. I post an update in a few weeks.

    I like your hand speed and how you quickly pull back after you land.

    Power looks better than average for a guy your weight and build

    As others mentioned, you telegraph your punches too much.

    Combinations should come out smoothly without thinking too much about them. Just let them go as easy as 1-2 or 1,2,3

    You've definitely something to build on.

    Thank you for the tips and complements. After I read all of the comments, I decided to change the way I train on the heavy bag to where I focus more on power and really sit down on my punches and not focus on combos. I utilize shadowboxing to work on my movement, combos, and coordination (Sparring without the opponent).

    14 oz everlast. I don't recommend them because they are loose and don't provide any wrist support. If I had the money to buy another glove it would probably be a 10 oz or 12 oz ringside glove because those sizes are what they use in the amateurs or closer to it.

    I have another pair of old school style gloves that don't have any padding and my speed is just the same with those.

    Without seeing your feet, it's impossible to give a solid critique. I disagree that you shouldn't work on your combinations on the heavy bag. I think you absolutely should work on your combinations. I also think you should vary the speed and power of your punches as well.

    Try moving, the bags not, your opponent will. Plus you are pushing your shots, Greys gave good advice.

    Alright guys, enough with the commenting on this thread. That was my first workout after a month off and I wasn't planning to record anything. I didn't even telegraph my punches before that lol.

    I'm going to post a more updated video if I can find an angle to put my phone at where you can see everything. My mobility around the bag is limited because there is a wall there and a 3 inch bar at my front foot preventing me from moving forward. You'll see what I'm talking about when I make a new video.

    Simple answer is don't post sparring video's here fam. I did years ago and learned the lesson. Surprised nobodies told you to quit and go to a gym yet.

    Minor advice, create target(s) through the bag you are punching at, so fist stays tense through impact. And rotate/pivot your strong foot the entire time you're punching.

    Also, stop making excuses and be able to handle constructive criticism. With that said, be able to differentiate good advice from bad advice. However, there were some solid things said here.
