Fascinating. It would be even better if we could expand on Old_Fogey's work and create a table like this for wins/losses over Top 10 RING heavyweights.
Which gives a knockout percentage of: (calculated as percentage of total number of fights, not of wins only) 1. Marciano: 89% 2. Louis: 70% 3. Lewis: 64% 4. Bowe: 60% 5. Liston: 57% 6. Foreman: 57% 7. Frazier: 54% 8. Ali: 52% 9. Tyson: 50% 9. Johansson: 50% 11. Holmes: 36% 12. W. Klitschko: 33% 12. V. Klitschko: 33% 14. Patterson: 29% 15. Schmeling: 27% 16. L. Spinks: 25% 17. Holyfield: 24% 18. Baer: 23% 19. Carnera: 20% 19. Rahman: 20% 19. Charles: 20% 22. Walcott: 14% 23. Sharkey: 9% 24. Braddock: 0% 24. Moorer: 0% 24. Briggs: 0% 24. L. Spinks: 0% It is clear from this list that Marciano has a RIDICULOUSLY high knockout percentage against top2 contenders and better. Lewis, Liston, Foreman and Frazier being at the top should be no suprise. What is worth mentioning though, is that ALi stopped 52% of his top2 rated opponents, which is only a little bit less than Frazier, Foreman and Liston and is more than Tyson did. What's more, it is a lot more than Holmes (36%) who is considered to have a bit more power than Ali.
That sure does make pretty reading for Marciano fans, it's hard to justify my positioning of him at #13 in light of that. It's only a part of the picture, but compelling none the less.
If i have some spare time the next days, i will go over it. Could this thread be made a sticky, by the way?
In the words of the great Lennox Lewis, "Definitely". ...But only if we can get the rankings for the top 10. While interesting, there is simply too much stickied at the moment. Perhaps I can merge this into the "Toolbox" thread.
Great info and i for sure am taking notes. But if you sticky it, you got to do it for every weight, and things get out of hand In my opinion.
I agree, but this is useful. Resume boils down to three levels. Great fighters--you beat Dempsey. Very good fighters--you beat Young Stribling. Rated fighters--Beating three #10's might not be exactly as impressive as beating Dempsey or Stribling. That said, if I get time, I may try to work on a few. I have in the past--I'll see if I still have the info about.
You've never had an avator Fogey. This week, we are doing Star Wars avator pictures. I would like to see you choose an avator. Perhaps Obi-Wan-Kanobi or Yoda. If you need help in uploading an avator, contact me or someone on the forum. We'll walk you through the process of obtaining an avator. BUT DO IT!!!!!!
Harry Kid Matthews is not added to the Marciano list. That would be ten. He was a rank number 2 I suppose when he fought the Rock.
Yes, and LaStarza was the number 1 contender, but I went by the yearly Ring Magazine ratings. I just don't have access to the ratings for each month. I figure it will even out for most of the champions. The ratings I used was that a fighter appeared in the top three-champion, #1 or #2, contender-in one of the yearly Ring Magazine ratings.
I screwed up Carnera. He defeated 6 and lost to 4--His total record was 7-4 with 2 knockouts. Sorry, fellas.
An interesting list with some surprizing winners. While not a top 27 list per se it is an interesting measure of atainment of certain champions against the best of their era. My criticism of the way that they are ranked is that it is unfavourable to fighters who are have an average ratio against their top oponents but fought a large number of them. For example Vitally Klitschko who is 2-1 is over Walcott who is 6-8. Poor old Walcott gets a bit of a raw deal having fought Louis twice and Marciano twice.
