Great work fellas, really enjoyed reading these stats.

Another interesting approach (not saying it is as objective as the above, or that I have the will power to do it myself!) would be to identify each champs top 5 (?) victories, based on opponents name and status at the time of the victory.

For example, I believe Holyfield's top victory using these criteria was over previously undefeated '93 HW champ Bowe, with post-prison '96 alphabet HW champ Tyson taking second place.

I believe Ali's best victory was over previously undefeated '74 HW champ Foreman, with '64 HW champ Liston in second place (first loss in 10 years, coming off 3 KO1 wins), and '73 Frazier taking his 3rd slot.

Anyone prepared to make some contributions on these and other champs?

    Interesting comments. My own reaction
    1. Carnera--I overlooked his foul loss to Stribling. He should be 7-4, but only drops one place into a tie with Frazier. Underrated.
    2. Schmeling--I think if he had gotten the controversial decision over Sharkey & the draw with Uzcudun, he would end 8-3 (losses to Baer, Louis, & the first Hamas fight, which I don't think was questionable). Still he would rank #5 on Chris' list, I think, which is interesting and impressive.
    3. Holmes--the questionable loss to Spinks might be balanced out by the extremely close victories over Norton & Williams.
    4. I agree that Walcott, and also Patterson, are not given enough credit for their large number of victories. Also, how does Vitali (1-2) end up under any circumstances ahead of Walcott (6-8). Walcott even has the higher percentage.

Whenever I see a new fight, I tend to note down any information about it such as punchstats, round scorings etc...and any rankings mentioned in the broadcast too, ABCs and/or Ring.

If that would be helpful towards another version of this list, I think I have info like that for guys like Lewis, Bowe, Holyfield and others.

Bump, because this is just a good thread to keep at hand for a quick look at the champs' resumes.

As an update to Wlad's stats, he's now 7-0 (4 KO) by this criteria - Byrd x 2, Peter x2, Ibragimov, Chagaev, Rahman. I think Chambers was just short, being rated #3 heading into that fight.

Pre 1930 the guys listed are based mainly off matt d's rankings and before them it's guys who were considered legitimate challengers.

It only includes top ten opponents at the time, so for purposes of ring year rankings it's either the year before or the year after.

I know it's not a comprehensive any time top ten but it's a start if you guys are still interested? I might do it myself yet if noone else volunteers.

to hell with it, I'm awake now and I have the summer off.

I'll see if I can do a list based on the ts's criteria

win-lose-draw against an opponent how was ranked in the top 10 at any time.

I'll do everything post 1930 and then just for the fun of it I'll update my records on the old timers.

see you in a few days or so!
