    Can anybody clear up for me, is Illegible his actual name or could they just not read it from the scroll? I looked into him and couldn't find anything either way.

    That depends on who you're looking at. He mentions the usual suspects for the era Pausanias, Philostratus, Diodora, Pliney, etc. As weird as it is to not have one I don't think he actually has a bibliography. The book reads much more like a very long article or series of articles. When he references a fact he gives you who he's referencing. Sometimes what work is a bit of a pain, for example :

    I think without looking at anything that's one of pausanias' from description so more than likely it was actually an inscription that had eroded.

    Yeah, as far as I know it's a lost name. It would be kinda funny if his name was actually unknown or some such similar and over time we lost that bit of info and just started assuming you can use other words that mean the same thing.
