Heavyweight champions successful defences – The numbers

    1. J. Louis 25 defences
    2. L. Holmes 20 defences
    3. M. Ali 19 defences
    4. W. Klitshcko 16 defences
    5. L. Lewis 14 defences
    6. T. Burns 11 defences
    7. V. Klitshcko 11 defences
    8. J. Frazier 9 defences
    9. M. Tyson 9 defences
    10. J. Johnson 8 defences
    11. E. Holyfield 7 defences
    12. J.J. Jeffries 7 defences

NOTE- They are not consecutive, just the total of successful defences-

    WBO is a world title

    L. Holmes defences of the IBF are legit, as his reign before he met Ali.

Frazier defences count as part of the New york state athletic commission.

It should be said that all 11 defenses by Vitali have been Alphabet belts & he has never been the #1

Lineal defenses are far more important historically & I doubt Joe Louis' record will ever be broken

Fair points but in this day and age how hard is it to get your hands on number 1, far easier in the past.

Might aswell cancel out Holmes defences pre Ali, and he in reality only had one belt a one created for him.

Frazier count out aswell then...so does Tyson.

Wrong, Vitali was No.1 after Lewis had retired and he beat Sanders. He was Ring No.1. ;)

The WBO was not yet regarded as a major title when Volo first held it. I don't count that initial reign for this statistical comparison. Also, why did you leave Ezzard Charles off?

The bottom line when you see these number is..It is damn hard to stay on top for a long time. Thats why it is an important criteria for judging all time greatness

Right now Wlad is the consensus #1 but even then he's not really undisputed. Vitaly coming out of retirement has actually hurt Wlad's standing because he basically ruling side by side.

All the men on that list were at one point in their careers undisputed. That is the knock on Vitaly, at no point in his career was he undisputed. Should he retire soon he can give that distinction to Wlad.

  12. True. After Lewis Vitali held the real title (Ring Title) for a period of time and then he retired and Wlad picked it up. But in terms of defending the lineal title,I dont think Wlad will come close to breaking Joe Louis record. Wlad has only had the lineal title for a few years now and Louis had it for 11 years!

And i hope Wlad can be the first Heavyweight Champion who has all the major belts (IBF/WBO/WBA/WBC) at the same time.

Wlad does not have 16 defences. He isn't even undisputed right now. Vitali was the champion and hasn't lost since then. If Wlad is champion, it's only since beating Chagaev.

    Paper titles mean nothing.

you need to look further into boxing history before making silly comments like this.

Wlad has actually been number 1 since 06.

None of serrano's defences meant as much as arguello's.

None of foreman's after beating mm meant anything and certainly not as much wlad's recent fights.

It's like saying vasquez was the best fw in the world going into the hamed fight

Or it's like saying briggs was the defending champ against lewis
