* John L. Sullivan * Jack Johnson * Jess Willard * Jack Dempsey * Joe Louis * Sonny Liston * Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali * George Foreman * Larry Holmes * Mike Tyson * James 'Buster' Douglas
Got the wheels going with the public. Instead of the typical slow progress in public perception and attention, these Heavyweights moved the dial much quicker than the rest of the group.
Thanks. I get your drift now. Sullivan Johnson Dempsey Louis Marciano Ali Tyson Lewis (For being a great British heavy. Quite a novelty)
I agree with your sentiments on this,Unforgiven. Only us hardcore boxing fans really knew about Holmes. He did n't strike a chord with the non boxing type.
As HW champion, Liston drew a great deal of comment and attention because of his sordid background and perceived invincibility.
Mr. Un, I was debating on that one, but his victory over Gerry Cooney was very important 'at the time'. And his destruction over Muhammad Ali, closed the door on that once great career, and saved the public from being taken in by Ali again. Larry Holmes 'saved the public' from further embarrassing acts by Muhammad Ali.
