In a round robin of all these 50's to 70's heavyweight contenders who would have come out on top - Ernie Terrell Eddie Machen Zora Folley George Chuvalo Nino Valdes Henry Cooper Karl Mildenberger Cleveland Williams Jerry Quarry Mac Foster Leotis Martin Oscar Bonavena Earnie Shavers Ron Lyle Joe Bugner
Just a thought - why don't you remove Terrell since he held a version of the title and add in Bob Baker and Jimmy Young to make a neat even 16. If you pair them off or place in groups it would be easier.
Yes, I should certainly have included Jimmy Young to round it up to 16. A lot of the others did fight each other so grouping is difficult.
Tournaments like this are very uncertain, even when there is a clear standout. Sh1t happens, and some people are luckier in the draw, than others. I suspect that the winner would be one of Valdez, Machen, or Quarry, in chronological order.
Quarry is a good pick although Machen was too smart for him when he was a little green, Folley would have given him the same problems and I suspect he would have difficulty with Jimmy Young whilst Terrell would have tied him up all night long. Machen was unable to beat Folley and only drew with Williams whilst losing to Terrell and Mildenberger so I can't see him coming out on top.
Classic Catch 22:....Liston destroys Folley, Folley ups Machen, and Machen goes 12 rds with Liston, and tries to get Liston to give him a "title shot" knowing he had developed the proto-type plan that Clay later will use to beat Liston.
I'm thinking Quarry or Jimmy Young if he's in there. May need to think about it more tho. I know who a certain somebody is going to pick already
