All this hype about the current up and comers in the division. I'm still seeing a bunch of guys who are all hype. None of them have accomplished much, still with the exception of Wlad. I don't think there is a heavyweight in the world today who would see the 8th round vs Ali. With the exception of Povetkin who might just make it for a later knockout or near shutout loss.
Agree with everything except the fact that Povetkin would last more than 8 rounds with Ali. Wlad's jab/short hook knocked Povetkin the F down. Can you imagine what a prime Ali would do to the overrated Russian? :yikes
I was trying to be generous to this era hahaha. But you're right. It's unlikely that Povetkin sees the 8th round.
This. There are a couple of reasons why it is getting more interesting. When the Klitschko's were dominating they where only the real two HW's you could fight and earn some decent money against (until Haye's relatively brief foray into the HW division) so a lot of the top contenders didn't face each other as their promoters didn't want to risk their fighter losing against a fellow contender and losing a big pay day against the Klitschko's. These fight's between the top contenders would not have been mistaken for a Mayweather v Whitaker affair, but, they would have been competitive and interesting. We are seeing this avoidance at the minute in the WW division as the top contenders there don't want to lose a potential big payday against Mayweather or Pacquiao. Also, today we are seeing the emergence of big HW's who can box and/or move a little and thus stand a decent chance of dethroning Wlad. Are Fury, Wilder, Joshua and possibly Price future ATG's? Probably not. But, they are a more interesting and threatening proposition to Wlad than the usual small, slow, plodding blown up CW's that we have saw far to much of since the retirement of Lewis and the emergence of the Klitschko's.
There's s few good fighters coming through but they aren't ready for the top level yet. There's a very dominant champ and one more big punching champ. A few decent contenders and a few unbeaten prospects. It's ok but it could either be very good or pretty weak in s few years depending how these guys develop
Interesting yes but any good not so sure. Another post had lewis and holyfields resumes and that really shows how good they were but also how poor the current heavyweight division is
Sorry, is the OP asking if the HW division is improving from how it has been for the last 15 years, or whether or not it is better than when Ali was fighting? If it is the first, then I would say, Yes it is improving, if it is the second then I would say of course not
I think we can rank the division and their fighters. Wlad I've always seen as a B level fighter in a C or D division, Wlad is a B/B+ to Vitali's B+, Lewis' A and Ali's A+... Of the upcoming guys I think Joshua has B+ to A level potential, he is a freak physically, maybe the freakiest ever, and skillwise he improves by the day. Hgovic the WSB amateur looks like another B level talent who may turn pro after the Olympics so with Joshua and Hgovic we'd have two fighters the level of the Klitschko brothers who may actually fight each other. Something we haven't had in 11+ years since Lewis vs Vitali.
doesnt get more exciting since david haye was "bringing excitement to a dead heavyweight division" since 2008
