Hopefully Mr Kool Kevin will join us next week!!!! Until then here is his intro:

Reminder: The point of this series is to get people to rewatch, rescore, and discuss the actual fights. Even if you only have a few free minutes to watch a round and sneak in a quick comment, your contribution will be much appreciated...

*If you submit a scorecard feel free to make a recommendation for next week* Thanks

    2 controversial decisions

Floyd Patterson vs Jerry Quarry II

I was going to do Quarry I but there seems to be a lot of interest in:

    Floyd Patterson vs Jimmy Ellis
    9-14-68

There are 2 color versions on YouTube if you prefer those...but be warned they both cut out the final 2 minutes of the fight and interview. So either way you will need to come back for the 15th round!

If anyone is overzealous or like me has to much time on your hands, feel free to watch and or score Patterson vs Quarry I as well!

Enjoy and I look forward to scoring them with you!

I scored it on the California system which is 1 point for the winner of a round (an additional point for a knockdown), no points for even rounds. As a great old west coast writer once said to me, "The old California system is exactly like the 10 point must system...only less math." And he was absolutely right.

    Patterson-Quarry I

    Round 1: Even-no points
    Round 2: Quarry (2 knockdowns) 3 points
    Round 3: Patterson
    Round 4: Patterson
    Round 5: Patterson
    Round 6: Even
    Round 7: Patterson (1 knockdown) 2 points
    Round 8: Patterson
    Round 9: Quarry
    Round 10: Quarry

    Patterson 6-5

    Patterson-Quarry II

    Round 1: Patterson
    Round 2: Quarry (1 knockdown) 2 points
    Round 3: Quarry
    Round 4: Quarry (1 knockdown) 2 points
    Round 5: Even
    Round 6: Quarry
    Round 7: Even
    Round 8: Patterson
    Round 9: Patterson
    Round 10: Patterson
    Round 11: Quarry
    Round 12: Patterson

    Quarry 7-5

They're styles gelled for two enjoyable contests. I really need to sit down again to score Patterson-Ellis.

We had the fights close scorewise with a few subtle differences.

    Patterson vs Quarry I
    1 Quarry
    2 Quarry (3pts)
    3 Patterson
    4 Quarry
    5 Patterson
    6 Patterson
    7 Patterson (2pts)
    8 Patterson
    9 Quarry
    10 Quarry
    By rounds I scored 5-5
By pts 7-6 Quarry (my official card)
    10 pt must Quarry 94-93

Differences: you scored 1 even I edged it to Quarry, 4 you scored Patterson I scored Quarry, and 6 you scored even I scored Patterson.
On the rounds we had different you had 1 Patterson 2 even I had 2 Quarry 1 Patterson.

    Patterson vs Quarry II
    1 Patterson
    2 Quarry (2 points)
    3 Quarry
    4 Quarry (2 points)
    5 Quarry
    6 Quarry
    7 Patterson
    8 Patterson
    9 Quarry
    10 Patterson
    11 Patterson
    12 Patterson
    Rounds 6-6
Pts Quarry 8-6 (my official card)
    10 pt must Quarry 114-112

Differences: you had 5 even I went Quarry, 7 you had even I had Patterson, 9 you had Patterson I had Quarry and 11 you had Quarry I had Patterson. On our different rds you scored 1 for each and 2 even, I split it 2-2 in rounds. So our numbers are different but we agree on victor and margin.

Just scored Quarry - Patterson 2. I scored for Patterson 114-113, giving Patterson 1,3,7,8,9,10,11, giving Quarry 2,4,5,6 and scoring 12 EVEN. Of course Quarry gets 2 point rounds for the second and fourth rounds. I had Patterson winning by rounds 7-4-1.

Quarry tired about midway in the fight but he didn't show much enthusiasm even early in the fight. He looked like he would rather be somewhere else, his concentration was lacking. Made me wonder if he already showing signs of the problems that would affect him later in life?

Patterson looked like he was enjoying fighting although I have never seen the speed from Patterson that others see. Patterson did a workman like job, Quarry for once seemed to have the physical advantages in this fight, he was bigger and stronger than his opponent, but to me he just didn't show the fire necessary to win the fight.

I always enjoy your cards and insights. In regards to Floyd’s speed I think he showed it in bursts or flashes but he is 35 at this point and no longer could put together combinations and didnt have the workrate and his speed had declined.

I scored the Ellis - Patterson fight similar to the way the ref scored it, 9-5-1 for Ellis. I gave Ellis 1,2,3,5,8,10,11,12,15. I scored rounds 4,6,7,13,14, for Patterson and I scored 9 EVEN. I scored it with the sound off until the end when I turned on the sound to hear the decision. On the 10 point system I scored it 144-141 giving Patterson a 2 point round for the knockdown in the 14th.

A lot of rounds were close, but IMO Ellis was busier and he forced the fight most of the way. Patterson opened up in bursts and he got much more aggressive in the 13th and 14th. I wouldn't argue with anybody who scored it for Patterson, but I felt that Ellis won. I have since found out that the ref didn't call the knockdown in the 14th a knockdown, I suppose it doesn't matter much since the ref scored the fight 9-6 in rounds.

Cool deal! I am half done and will finish later or tomorrow? Do you have any recs for HW fight of the week? I am not a huge HW fan and don’t have many ideas for upcoming FOTW HW fights

Hey bro I am just trying to get official totals out in place for the consensus totals at the end of the week. Since you had it 7-4-1 in rounds for Patterson, and Quarry had 2 or rounds in 2 & 4....is your official card 7-6 for Patterson based upon official scoring? I don’t want to total yours wrong

I don't mean to presume upon the question to Pat, but based on California scoring at the time, his score would indeed be 7-6 for Patterson.

    Patterson vs Ellis

Tough fight to score. I have 9 rounds that were tight enough to score even or towards one guy or the other. I really only felt like 6 rounds were fairly clear and decisive 4 for Ellis and 2 for Patterson. Probably why there are so many split verdicts and claims of robbery and controversy...Harold of course was calling everything Floyd’s way and even in the post fight interview with the ref and the fighters. Can’t help but wonder if that sways people.

    1 Ellis
    2 Ellis
    3 Ellis
    4 Patterson
    5 Ellis
    6 Patterson
    7 Ellis
    8 Patterson
    9 Ellis
    10 Patterson
    11 Patterson
    12 Ellis
    13 Patterson
    14 Patterson
    15 Ellis

    Official scorecard Ellis 8-7
    10 Pt must Ellis 143-142

I agree, I just didn’t want to assume and take liberties with someone else’s card.
