Finally got around to rewatching. I gave Byrd a very slight edge in the first round but I might even score it even.

I thought the way Merchant hated on Byrd, both during the fight and after the stoppage, was completely classless and idiotic. One of his worst moments in the booth as far as I’m concerned. This was around the point in Merchant’s career where it seemed like he fell in love with his own “cranky, disrespectful old man” shtick. Stoppage was fine, given that Byrd didn’t have his legs and wasn’t showing anything offensively, but old-school refs definitely would have let him go on.

Good post. Guys like Byrd and Jimmy Young can make big power punchers look very awkward but Ibeabuchi stayed patient, kept the pressure up, and eventually nailed him. He threw some bad punches “behind Byrd” in spots where he should have recognized that Byrd was already moving, and he reached a bit with his jab at times in the first few rounds, but Byrd wasn’t in position to counter. I was surprised that he wasn’t more physical and active when he had Byrd in the ropes, but it all worked out in the end.

Larry was a complete ***** in this fight actually, so it's not just you.

What did he expect Chris to stand toe to toe with a man who was 35 pounds heavier, way stronger and much more powerful and completely negate his advantages in speed and elusiveness just to satisfy an old idiot behind a mike?

Chris fought very well against Ike but got caught and hurt by a monster shot. No shame in that at all. Shame on Larry Merchant for criticizing a guy who was drooling and clearly completely discombobulated after trying his hardest. I still get angry with Merchant about this.
