This could be a matter of personal opinion but anyway, Great Heavyweight s ,which was their "Breakthrough " fight ?The fight which made people take em seriously .That's Insiders and boxing fans In general . More modern times could be Lennox Lewis -Razor Ruddock Mike Tyson -Marvis Frazier Muhammad Ali -Archie Moore ?
I didn`t think there was much hype around the Moore v Ali fight because I thought Ali was clear favourite, Moore`s career was going nowhere at that stage and Ali was a 7-1 underdog when he went on to fight Liston.
Ruddock was definitely Lewis' coming out party. Larry Holmes' was the first Earnie Shavers fight. Tyson was maybe the Jesse Ferguson fight. Holyfield, at heavy, was probably Dokes. I think Ali ("Clay") was on people's radar after winning Gold, but I'm not sure the public believed he was special until he won the title vs. Liston. Like Ali, Foreman was on the radar after winning the Gold, but I think it was winning the title vs. Frazier that sold the public on him. Then he lost that support and only started regaining it vs. Cooney and cemented it with his challenge of Holyfield. Some guys you just assume they're going to be something based on their amateur pedigree - Patterson, Bowe, Holyfield - while others seem to come out of nowhere, in a way - Holmes, Marciano.
Holmes beat Marvis in the first round?! Wa that Larry`s only 1st rd KO? I think I got confused with the L.Spinks fight, thanks.
In boxing mag in the 90`s they said Holy had no chance against Tyson because he struyggled against Dokes and got hit too much.
