Anyone remember what was probably the first of the last man standing events of the modern era? The rather deliciously named Heavyweight Slugfest of 1993?

Is that the tournament that Tony Tubbs won?

Wasn't there originally supposed to be a British bare-knuckle champ involved, who pulled out?

I have it on DVD and it's so long since I watched it I can't even remember who won. But I started watching it again yesterday and will report back on who won when I get through it.

Tubbs is certainly in it. I've already seen him get through the 1st round, and I think from memory you are probably right that he wins the $1 million first prize.

The 16 contestants were as follows:

    Bonecrusher Smith
    Tony Tubbs
    Tyrell Biggs
    Bert Cooper
    Craig Petersen
    Jose Ribalta
    Derek Williams
    Shane Sutcliffe
    Marshall Tillman
    Yeugeni Sudakov
    Daniel Dancuta
    Lester Jackson
    Ray Phillips
    Jason Williams
    Derek Roddy
    Willie Jasckson

Shane Sutcliffe d Ray Phillips DQ3
Tyrell Biggs d Yeugeni Sudakov SD3

Each fighter earned $15,000 for every bout they appeared in and the overall winner $1Mil.

A 1st round KO was worth an additional $10,000.

I will put money on Cassius Craig Peterson going through this one undefeated. Anyone up for the bet?

I don't recall it all. But was lucky enough to pick up the event on disc years ago. It's so long since I watched it I'd forgotten nearly every aspect

Discussed this thread under a tony tubbs thread recently....the whole thing is on u tube.. tubbs and biggs were the favourites ..met in semi final...tubbs looked good and won.
Only got 170 grand as a major sponsor pulled out a few days before.
Tyrell said they all got together for some sparing days before and the bare knuckle guy saw bonecrusher and tubbs going at it in sparing and did a runner. !

I've only been posting here for about 2 weeks. So I didn't see the other mention within a thread of this particular tournament.

Tubbs & Bonecrusher came into it not looking in the greatest of shape. But Bonecrusher was still serviceable and Tubbs still had the explosive hand-speed and some power.

Funny about the bare knuckle guy

Picked up where I left off watching this event and the official reason for Peterson's withdrawal was "the physician deemed him to be dehydrated".

I liked Peterson, but 3 rounds against Bert Cooper and a fairly sizable rest period and he was too dehydrated to continue?

In the call at semi-final stage the commentators said the winner was guaranteed $170,000 and the runner-up $50,000. But that the winner had "the potential to earn up to $1Million depending on the overall revenue".

Someone posted about this last week (you posted on it!)

A total waste of time, old men and Journeymen were conned by the promoters in a night of farce. This thing does not deserve one thread let alone two. If people want three round tournament fights, go to your local amateur show, I am sure they would appreciate the support.

    Tubbs got 170 grand....dollars obviously..
The fighters found out a few days before that the money had dropped...one named fighter...i cant remember who it was withdrew but the rest were there and had trained for it so they stayed....i dont think the event was all that bad...although it was generally a mixture of older and under achievers....but lets be honest you werent gonna get the top guys in it....the guys who were in it were there for the money.

Bonecrusher gassed half way through in his semi-final against Dancuta, and clinched away the final round and a half. Dancuta 30-27.

The 258 pound Tubbs cruised through his semi-final against Biggs, sitting back and counterpunching just often enough to win each round. Tubbs 30-27.
