Fellow followers of the sweet science, ask yourselves this, if both Klitschko's were 6 foot and weighed around 200pds, would they be as good? Myself and many others think the Klits win mostly on their size. They say there are no more good heavyweights, not in the extra large heavies like the Klits, but there is a stack of guys who are cut, and in shape and throw. The cruisers are the heavies of today. What would Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano be today? Stinkin' cruisers who nobody gives a hoot about. Are we missing great fights, and great fighters cos now every heavyweight has to be big. Big guys are not as atheletic slow, lardy, as the guys within the 185-210pd range. Guys in that range will bring the heavywt title the excitement it once had. David Haye as a cruiser was awesome. All we had to do was say, heavyweight championship instead of the dated "cruiserweight".
They don't win because of their size They win because everyone they fight are ******ed moron bums that is at best C+ Level fighters. A Prime Tyson in today's division at 5'11, and a Prime Holyfield at 6'1 will pressure the **** out of them and probably beat them 3 out of 5 times.
David Tua weighed 200 pounds for his first few fights and we all knew the kind of power he had. Size doesn't really matter as much as skill. Of course size dictates your style but the Klitschko's would be as good as they are if they were 6'0" and 215. But no we do not need any of this superheavyweight bull****. No more divisions. Marco Huck did well at 209. Haye fought at 210. There are many smaller heavyweights who are still good fighters. How many huge guys are actually any good. Klitschko bros,Tyson Fury,Pulev and David Price.
Not this garbage again. We don't need another weight class. Adamek could go back down in weight if he so chose to, as could Chris Arreola, Eddie Chambers and the numerous other top heavies that have gotten dispatched by one of the two K-Bros., of course making exceptions for some of the really big guys like Shannon Briggs and Tony Thompson. They stay at Heavyweight because they can get HBO money potentially which is better than having to do a European Tour and not even be covered by the US media.
size matters even at hw, but i agree it's hard to right now justify another division. as others pointed out if there were prime holyfields and tysons walking around, the klits would have their hands full. the main problem is that there just aren't too many dangerous hws at the contender/challenger level now and in the recent past (regardless of size). if there was a super heavy division, the comp would be even weaker currently because there would be even less to chose from. eventually things will hopefully continue to improve and with there being more and more fit 245 pounders a super hw division would make sense. however, there should be less smaller divisions now and those 7 lb divisions are a joke
Deal with it. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwxG4E6eABE"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwxG4E6eABE[/ame]
Ufc has a 260lb weight limit for hw I think a 240lb ceiling for hw would stop these mismatches as guys like the klits would have to cut a little weight and their slob opponents like arreola solis etc would have to be in some sort of shape There should also be a 220lb minimum and guys like chambers banished to c/w where they actually have a chance
Hell no, 220 mininum? What about guys like Jennings who come in at 218, or Smokin' Joe who was in at 210?
The OP is on the right track, but I'd prefer a new division, max weight 225. Everything above 225 would be super heavyweight. I think you'd see alot of big guys come in better shape cause they'll need to cut to make weight at 225. I'm thinking of guys like Povetkin, Chagaev, Arreola, Solis etc that would look good at 225 but don't normally make it in that low. But the best reason for a 200-225 division is it sets up good title match-ups. We'd see more of type of fights we've been seeing on NBC. Incidentally, Duva also feels there are great fights to be made at this weight and hopefully other promoters will put their weight behind creating a new division. Adamek vrs. Povetkin or Haye for a legit world title would be a sweet fight.
1. Wladimir has the best technical style out there after JMM. If he was 6ft and 205 he would still be whipping everyone in the HW division because of exceptional ability and conditioning. 2. Mike Tyson is 5'9 or 5'10. Size can help based on style, but doesn't win you fights by itself. 3. We don't need another weight class. However, I thing weigh-ins should be on the day of the fight. Guys rehydrating 20lbs is bull**** and dangerous. Also, I'd propose dropping some weight classes and increasing the range of weights. - LW 131-140 - Welter 141-150 - MW 151 - 175 - LHW to 176-200 - Cruiser 201-235 - Heavy 236-300
They should have made a seperate (SHW) division for Ali, Foreman and Chuvalo in the 70's too... they just beat up the others because they were so much bigger, their skills had nothing to do with it. :bart
atsch It has nothing to do with skill, it's about size. All things being equal, a guy weighing 245 lbs will have an advantage over a guy weighing 215. This is obvious to everyone--it's the reason there are weight classes in boxing.
You didn't get my post... There have always been bigger guys in the heavyweight division... think Louis, Ali, Foreman, Bowe, Lewis... And who did complain then about those guys being too big to belong in the division?!? Now that they don't like who's on top, some fans suddenly feel the need for seperation. Bull****! Small HW's just need to pick it up, like they did in the old days.
