You're right they weren't middleweights ,for the most part they were light heavies and Marshall was often conceding lumps of weight to them! Grigorian never beat a Ring top ten rated fighter. Marshall beat 8 men who were world champions, and 8 men who are Hall of Famers!
Zoff was not in the top ten when he fought Grigorian. They fought in2002 ,Zoff had not been ranked since 1999! Grigorian himself never got higher than number 7 , he was a protected alphabet champion who defended against unranked journeymen for a spurious crown . Lamotta fought Marshall in1944 Lamotta was then the number2 ranked middleweight in the world! He was number6 in42,number1 in43,number 2 in44,number 3 in 45,number 1 in46,number 5 in47,number 3 in48! Answer your question!
Marshall beat the number 2 middleweight in the world when he beat Lamotta. Marshall beat 8 world champions and 9 men who are in the Hall Of Fame None of Grigorian's opponents are in the Hall Of Fame and he himself never was ranked higher than number 7 ! Grigorian NEVER beat a currently top ten ranked fighter, he only met one top man and got stopped! That explains his stats !
Sorry, poorly worded. Some people rank Marciano up higher because he never lost. Others rank him lower because he retired when he did and they feel he avoided the up and comers. Larry Holmes would have been ranked higher by most people if he didn't try to comeback, same with Tyson in many cases.
="Ra's Al-Ghul, post: 18919490, member: 108619"]La Motta was probably at that time at a losing streak (started possible there). How often will you repeat this lie? As I have explained he won against one future Middleweight champion and maybe another former paper champion of his divison (what his opponents did somewhere else is unintersting). While Grigorian won as well against two world champions of his own weight class. While he fought the same challengers as his co-champions Johnston and Holiday (Rios, Rivas among others) and Janukowsky had only lost against Chavez (when who was 87-0-0) and Gonzalez (for the WBC world championship) in over hundred professional fights. Artur Grigorian was for several years ranked at place 2 in Lightweight by the independent (unbiased) computer world ranking; what some biased Yankee journalists devised is irrelevant for me, but even other ones (which are more legitimized by boxfans/ rather neutral) as Fightnews and Boxing Monthly (are British magazine) rated him in the top 3 of his divison for some time (while Marshall was never top 5 and hardly top 10). I'm pretty sure Acelino Freitas will get into the Hall of Fame (Artur Grigorian himself possible too): None of Marshalls opponent hit as hard as Freitas did, as he never faced such a powerful puncher (who is possible all time top 5, pound for pound). He lost more than twenty percent of his fights (while Grigorian ten times less), because he was a second-tier boxer and never champion (in opposite to Grigorian, who held the record at Lightweight of most successful defences). You idiot, he WAS NOT STOPPED!!!! You only write here lies after lies, as I had already correct you about him never been stopped, last month!!! You do this either by intention or you have alzheimer![/QUOTE] Lamotta was the number2 ranked middleweight ,he had won his last 7 fights ,been the number 1 contender the previous year, and number 6 the year before that.,he would be no 3 the next year,no1 the year after that ,no 5 after that, no 3 after that and the following year win the title! Marshall was : No6 at middleweight in1939 No10 at LH in1940 No 10 at LH in1941 No5 at LH in1942 No1 at LH in1943 No1at LH in1944 No4 at LH in1945
. Conn refused to fight Marshall and vacated the lhvy title in May 1941! Mills was the world champion from 1948 when he beat Gus Lesnevich ,until 1950 when he lost his crown to Joey Maxim. Marshall was the number one contender during Lesnesvich's reign and he ko'd the number 5 Mills but it was Mill s who got the title shot! You don't know anything do you! FYI .Bivins was the number one heavyweight contender when he beat Marshall, he had 20 lbs on him and Marshall floored him before being stopped. I should be charging you for this education!
No he didn't. And based on what? I know it's your opinion and your certainly entitled to it. But what are you basing it on.? Sports writers of that era? Same sports writers who would've thought it was ok for him not to give minorities a shot? Hell, we don't know if he was the best heavyweight of his own era. What little film I've seen on him, and their is of him didn't show anything that a fighter like a prime Louis or especially a prime Ali would have to fear or Marciano,Liston,Holmes, and quite a few other championship AND contenders the last 60 yrs. In his prime he had losses to men under 5'10 fighting around 160/ 170 lbs. Now were to believe he would've been a serious threat to a Louis or Ali?
Many who saw both Dempsey and Louis live thought that Dempsey would stop the Bomber. Dempsey never lost to any 160/170 pounders when he was prime ,[if you are referring to Meehan Dempsey was pre prime.] BTW Perry is no longer with us,hasnt been for a few months now.
It never fails to astonish me how much you DON'T know about boxing, and when being informed of certain facts you still refuse to accept them. Here is just one example. When Lamotta signed to fight Marshall he stipulated that Marshall had to weigh in at no heavier than161pounds if he did he would pay a forfeit of $5000. Marshall made the weight and won the fight clearly. Lamotta got a purse of $25,312.80, Marshall $5000. In June of that year The Ring named Marshall as the greatest fighter pound 4 pound then active in the world. When Marshall fought Yarosz,Abrams, and Burley it was at level weights. Try and remember this . No charge for the lesson. Now its Kentucky Cobra's turn to rip you to pieces.
