This is a pretty even match Cooney punches harder,Wlad is probably the better boxer. Chins are about the same maybe cooney has a better one but both guys dont have the best of chins. I can see cooney knocking out wlad early, but Wlad is stiil the better fighter If had to pick i might go with wlad but I wouldnt bet on this one . In fact if the odds were big on wlad I might pick cooney.

Well my post my not as good as your PeteThePrince but I do try to be entertaining. And I think most americans spell it Wlad and most europeans spell it Vlad. So do you pronounce his name with the W sound of the V sound? I have no clue.

I pronounce it Vlad but I have only seen it spelled Wlad by boxing sites and in his fights. Only a mix-up could happen over a European fighter I guess.

    I think Cooney takes this.

No way will he stand for that gay hand slapping **** that Wlad loves to do..... piles on the pressure and keeps slamming the left hook in until the towel is thrown in.

Cooney TKO 5 with the cards pretty even.

Wlad proved he is not total **** in p4p terms by defeating such men as : mccline , austin , tony thompson. i give it to wlad maybe by decision , maybe a late stoopage. i tend more for a late stoppage.

frankenfrank the men you mentioned are not names to set up a legacy
they are men that cooney would of ko'd. i am not putting wlad down so dont think i am . and can quite easily see wlad beating cooney but there is a good case cooney could beat wlad

Thing is the likes of FrankenFrank aren't giving stylistic reasons.

Why? Because some of these posters are general trolls who haven't even watched fights and just trawl through boxrec.

LOL at some of these responses.

Ive seen quite a few Cooney fights and he is a one-handed fight. There is no way a 2009 Wlad loses to a guy like that. Wlad fights to his opponent's weakness.

Wlad moves left the whole fight (like he did with Chagaev) and tattoos him with jabs and rights leading to a mid-round stoppage. Cooney's length while it may give him some opportunities isn't going to be a big factor imo because of this. Holmes dominated the fight anytime he moved but as soon as he slowed down and tried to slug, Cooney had some success moments. I just see Wlad controlling the distance at all times.

He loops his punches far more than Wlad, who delivers crisp, staight shots. As soon as Cooney slows down a little, it will turn into a technical mismatch.

I don't think Cooney can take Wlad's power right either. Holmes turned Cooney's legs into jelly on more than a few occassions with his right and Wlad's is delivered just as quickly and it's heavier.

Not impressed with Cooney overall as a fighter. Good size and great power left but he was matched well leading up to the title shot. He faced adversity (losing to Holmes) and his career fell apart. He wasn't able to revitalize his career unlike Wlad. That's a big factor when considering how he matches up with top level hws. For that reason, I cannot consider him a top level fighter.

Put me down for Wlad tko 5-7.

LOL. The styles here are similar. The childish hate may be a dead giveaway. Have you opened up an ALT Fighting Weight? :think

Ultimately, I would pick Wlad to beat Gerry as would most and rightfully so. I do not however feel that its a forgone conclusion to say that Klitschko would win. For all of his shortcummings, Gerry Cooney had the kind of attributes that specifically were detrimental to a man of Wlad's style and habits. Klitschko was stopped on three occasions by left hooks, and Cooney's left was as deadly as any ever thrown in the ring. Additionally, he was a very fast starter and extremely dangerous within the first five rounds of a contest. Lastly, he had both height and reach that would match Wlad's and unlike many of Klit's best opponents, was 25 years old and in the prime of life when at his peak..

The Foreman and Spinks fights cannot be used as indicators to predict how this match would play out. Cooney's place among the heavyweight scene stretched from perhaps 1980 to about 1984. By 1987, he had long fallen out of the ratings, was no longer active and adhearing to poor lifestyle choices. So claiming that Wlad would Kill Cooney because of what Spinks did to him has no relevance in the equation. In fact, even his top fight with Holmes took place following a 13 month layoff and only one round of boxing in a two year period, yet he still gave a prime Holmes one of the best fights of his career.

My reasons for chosing Klitschko, is that I feel he has improved his boxing game significantly since taking on Manny Steward as a trainer. He no longer gets careless or courageous by mixing it up with big hitters and uses his full arsenal of skills to take apart his opponents in a more disciplined manner. His stamina seems to have improved and remains effective in the later rounds while keeping a controlled tempo ( similar to how Holmes beat Cooney. ) His chin is still questionable, but he was never KO'd with a single shot. He only really got into trouble when his defensive skills failed him, and his tendency to panic permitted his foe to land multiple unanswered shots. I do not think that the current version of Wlad is as susceptible to this. The big trick is to play it safe within the first 4-6 rounds, and not let Cooney get on top of him the way he did to men like Norton, Lyle, Young or Denis. If Cooney gets him in a corner or on the ropes, then its bad news. But, if Wlad utilizes the jab and his improved defensive skills to stay on the outside, his chances of luring Cooney into uncharted waters is much better. Gerry's only been beyond 6 rounds on 3 occasions in his career, and past 8 only once. When a fighter is able to establish a regular landing pattern on Cooney, his weaknesses tend to get amplified and then gets into trouble...

I say this with no real conviction as an upset is a very real possibility, but I think Wlad breaks down Cooney and stops him sometime between rounds 9-11.

    It's too tough to call.
I think Wlad's the better fighter overall, but Cooney might just wade into him, make him lose his composure by pressuring him and knock him out fast.
But Wlad might keep his composure, land a good right and goodnight Cooney. Or contain him, control the pace and eke out a points win or late stoppage.
    It's a 50-50 fight.

I'll flip a coin on it.

    Winner : Wladimir Klitschko.
