Madison Square Garden is buzzing with this Double Main attraction as part of the first round of the Heavyweight Tounament. The fierce Jack Dempsey will be taking on the gigantic Russian Nicolay Valuev. & Wladimir Klitschko will be facing hometown new yorker "Gentleman" Gerry Cooney. Valuev is expecting Dempsey to move around the ring to avoid his heavy bombs. Dempsey attacks immediately & sinks his punches into Nicolay's midsection! Valuev responds, but his hands are way slower. Dempsey is ripping punch after punch into the giant. Valuev is backing up and is able to land his jab, which gives him a little breathing room. By the fifth round, Valuev is taking a tremendous amount of punishment & is offering little in response. His Manager has no choice but to throw in the towel before the sixth round! JACK DEMPSEY. 6 TKO. NICOLAY VALUEV The crowd is thundering for Long Island's Gerry Cooney as he rushes out throwing left hook bombs at Wladimir. In the second Klitschko catches an onrushing Cooney with a right hand & Gerry is offbalance & goes down! Cooney is up quickly, but his agression is toned down quite a bit. In the middle round Cooney is suprizing everyone with his effective use of the jab, which is throwing Wladimir off his timing. In the ninth Klitschko starts to find the mark with his right hand. Cooney is cut! His left eye has some bleeding. The fight is close & Wladimir comes out fast. a right midway lands hard & Cooney is Hurt! Gerry tries to fight back, but Klitschko again finds the mark & Cooney is down again! Cooney rises, but is in trouble.
