    When?

Well, the ones that he turned down for starters, ie: Gibbons, Miske, Tunney, etc.

I already answered your question. Your clear point was that the playing field was level and Wills was not screwed and Tunney fought all the best competition. I say you are reaching to split hairs and either know you are wrong or don't know the history of the fighters.

Tunney is really, really good. Tunney is one of the best fighters ever between 175 and 200, so is Rocky. People are going to have a mash of opinions.

I respect Tunney for sure, but Marciano, man. He could not have done much more in his time and is absolutely proven at the weight (of his time and pre)

    I agree with you.

But that doesn't make him unbeatable at that weight. Put one of the best that ever did it at that weight in with him and you have a debate at the very least. I trust ESB Classic. My pick is Marciano, but I was arguing early in the thread for a possible Tunney victory and it's re-assuring that there were others.

Tunney was also a great fighter and possessed many of the skills to trouble Rocky. Size, speed, over all boxing ability, excellent stamina, a rock chin and a champions heart. It is a very reasonable match up.

I'm of the opinion Dempsey is massively overrated, and Tunney got him at the tail to boot. I question Tunney's greatness and body of work as a heavy, while Marciano proved himself against the best of his day again and again. Tunney would have his moments, many did vs Rocky but he'd be ground down like the rest IMO. Tunney's no punk but i like The Rock here.

Nothing at all wrong with this post, I feel the same myself, but your previous post where you seem to infer people picking Tunney are by definition underestimating The Rock seemed a bit - speedbumpy?

Tunney is not a great heavy, by any means, but he's hell in a handbasket for anyone weighing under a certian (debatable) cut off point. Rocky is included, I think undoubtedly.

As to Dempsey, nobody on this forum has been harder on him than me in terms of his ATG status, but as a head to head threat under 200? Monsterous.

JT and McGrain: Both are you are extremely knowledgable and both posts insightful. I have also said Dempsey is one of the great unknowns in heavyweight history since he basically stopped being a fighter soon after winning the title. His inactivity ruined him. I simply do not know how good/great he could have been. Ducking Wills definately does not help.

No, you haven't. You've been tip-toeing around it every time I put it to you.

No, my clear point was that you are using an obvious double standard to criticize a particular fighter based on an assumption that you refuse to substantiate.

I'd say you should look in the mirror when you say that.

I think HE GRANT makes a valid point.

AND, there were a number of talented black Heavyweights, for example - Bearcat Wright and George Godfrey - that were VERY dangerous punchers.

Yep, plus Dempsey retired right at the time when Max Schmeling was an upcoming prospect. Dempsey smelled trouble.

    Rocky Marciano UD 15.
Gene was strong enough to keep JD at bay for 10 but i dont think he would have enough to keep the stronger more relentless Rock off for 15. I could see marciano taking the last 8 in fight that would be very tough to score
