No, really. Read some old issues of Ring magazine or KO magazine. Current heavyweights were never good enough to beat their predecessors. Not just now, but always. Ali couldn't beat Marciano, Marciano couldn't beat Louis in his prime, which is most likely true, Louis couldn't beat Dempsey etc. etc. Mike Tyson was an overblown cruiserweight who was good enough to dominate an era filled full of crappy heavyweights and he was going to be exposed by the first decent big man with a good jab he faced. This **** is just worn out.
I laugh at Ali not being able to beat Marciano. And to assume that Lewis couldn't beat some of the greats of the past is preposterous.
I would favor LL over practically any of his predecessors although some of them were far more technically versatile than he was. A power puncher with a long range and a precise heavy jab can beat cutsie-pie type fighters. Lewis was technically limited but he made his skills work for him.
I read an old Philippine sports magazine from the early-mid 1970's and there was an article there of local boxing experts talking about who's the greatest heavyweight of all time. Ali was there, Frazier, Dempsey, Louis, etc. But it was a consensus. Sonny Liston is the greatest of all time.
Lennox Lewis would get knocked out against Smoking Joe. That long reach is perfect for Joe to roll under and come up with that famous left hook! That's what I was hoping Tyson would do, but Tyson was way past it by then.
You're visualizing the Rahman KO punch, right? Lewis pawed around too much, that's why he got caught. Plus I think he was busy being a part time actor around the time of the fight. "Oceans 11" I think?
Very true. But I was also thinking of the Tyson fight. I understand that Lewis had that one in the bag, but that lazy jab and slow motion right hand had me wondering when we would see some old school Tyson side-to-side slippage, and it be nighty-night for Lennox. Unfortunately it never came. Same with the Vitali fight. Punches lost their snap. However, I would still take a prime Frazier over prime Lewis because Lewis is exactly who Frazier was built/trained for.
Same here. No denying that Lewis was great, but I never really liked him until he retired. I hated hearing him say "pugilist specialist". It was like nails on a chalkboard for me.
