Whether you like him or not, John Ruiz was still in the WBA heavyweight merry go round about 10-15 years after being iced by Tua.

    Re. Maskaev's sadistic management

1st fight - Alexander Miroshnichenko (21-0) Olympic bronze medalist, world amateur silver medalist, 2 x European bronze medalist, 3 x Soviet champion. Lost a controversial decision to Riddick Bowe in the Oympics and dropped Bowe x 2 and beat Lennox Lewis

7th fight - Oliver McCall (26-6). McCall had just lost his WBC title in his previous fight six months earlier against Frank Bruno (he had Bruno hanging on for dear life in the last round) and had beaten Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes, and Francesco Damiani in his previous six fights prior to facing Maskaev.

    12th fight - David Tua (26-0 (24).

Now after getting KO'd twice in his first 12 fights Maskaev's handlers threw him in with big punchers in Alex Stewart who was 41-6 (39 KOs) and Courage Tshabalala (23-2(20 KOs) in his 13th and 15th fights respectively.

Maskaev fought 5 undefeated opponents in his first 12 fights.

Add here that after being brutally KTFOed by Kirk Johnson Maskaev was thrown against hard-hitting giant Lance Whitaker right away, without any tune up fights.

If we're including amateur KO loses.

Larry Holmes was KO'd x 2 in the amateurs by a big punching fighter named Nick Wells, once in the 3rd and the other in round 1. Apparently, according to threads I've read on here, Holmes was carried out on a stretcher in both instances .

As I said, Wells was a big puncher: Amateur record: 189-18 with 110 knockouts, 72 in the first round

Signing with Don King will do a lot for you - not only in terms of rankings, but getting a free pass from refs for rules-violating excessive holding and other shameful tactics. Oh, and a few gift decisions too!

Max Schmeling was knocked out cold by Gipsy Daniels and stopped by Larry Gains, and came back to become heavyweight champion with wins over Jack Sharkey and Young Stribling.

It almost seems like cheating to go the old time route since most of those greats got knocked out on the way up...Johnson, Dempsey, etc.
