I think you are correct in what you say. I'm sure I've read that 8oz gloves were worn in some/all of Ali's bouts around that time. I think the wraps were far less substantial in those days too, so you'd be virtually feeling the knuckles through the gloves.

You might be on to something there, the gloves were "shorter" back then, the padding didnt go over the wrists like they do know as you said
