Where do you rank him p4p and what do you think of him? I personally underrated him heavily, I watched now some prime fights from him (81-88 ca.) and I think at the lower weights he would be a hard matchup for most fighters in history...

One of my favourite fighters of all time, i took a look at the Ring Magazine top 80 of the last 80 years and there are fighters on that list that i feel are inferior to camacho. Marcel Cerdan and Carlos Zarate are two examples.

Hector was like a young Benny Leonard.

i was never a camacho fan. but as a boxing fan, i have to give the devil his due. hector was a fantastic talent. very underrated he had the total package. if he was disciplined, and would have been able to keep those bad habits in check, he should have been mentioned alongside the recognized atg's. noone who has seen any of hectors early work would disagree.

There are other people who claim they had to stop the sparring session in order to save whitaker, but you'll just believe the story that favours pernell right? Either way hector was so ****in amazing in his prime, there is no doubt he would have given whitaker a hell of a fight.

In my opinion, i blame whitaker for not making his own legacy bigger, he just didnt have that "big fight" passion that sugar ray leonard did. If he wanted to, he would have fought quartey, camacho, rosario and terry norris and establish a top 5 of all times legacy.

It just sucks that whitaker only beat 2 greats, when he could have beaten 4.

I see Zarate-Camacho (ona p4p scale) eventuating much like Camacho-Rosario. Hector does well until Zarate bombs him and the complexion of the fight changes. Will end in a decision which will be controversial. That I had Rosario edging it, and I'd pick Zarate to edge it as well.

I have provided two ready sources where its claimed Whitaker got the better of it. Red has a memory of reading it in a magazine that he forgets. Who is it reasonable to believe in such a situation?

Whitaker faced the top dogs of his time, just like Leonard faced the top dogs of his time. It's extremely difficult to take care of every single decent fighter around you. If you want to claim Whitaker should have fought Norris, Quartey, Camacho and Rosario, well then I'll claim Leonard should have fought Pryor, McCallum, Curry and Jackson.

BTW, not disputing for a minute that the calibre of Leonard's top wins trump the calibre of Pernell's.

Hector Camacho should be a first ballot hall of famer. Take away the wins over ancient duran and leonard, the guy still beat 7 belt holders and a he utterly destroyed howard davis jr. The man was extremely talented, one of my favourites.

If you ever need an example of a fighter losing a fight he wins, then you need look no further than Rosario/Camacho.

Camacho's career as a (very) top class fighter was finished after that, he never recovered. He was lucky to beat an ancient comebacking Mancini, and although unlucky to lose his '0' to Greg, he got little sympathy, after wasting his amazing, perhaps once in a generation, talent that he had.

He redeemed himself a little in the Chavez fight, where even I had to admire his courage as he took his beating like a man, and showed that he did have a ticker, which to a point makes it even more annoying that he blew it post Rosario...

Against ranked/champion fighters according to The Ring: 11-4
