Hector Thompson June 1973 'I flew into Panama, and only had 1-week to prepare. But that is not an excuse, as he caught me good in the 3rd-Round, and then again late in the 8th Round, with that hard right hand and left hook. I wanted to continue, but the Referee stopped it with me on the ropes. I was hurt, but my mind was clear.' 'I thought I could take him, first by working steady over the first 5 or 6 Rounds, and making Roberto fight at a faster pace than he normally fights. I figured I would open up in the 7th-Round, and I did by landing some good right hands that knocked him off-balance.' 'At the end of the 7th-Round, I thought I had him, as he looked tired. But in the 8th, he just came out and started throwing punches from all angles.' This content is protected

I remember reading at the time an article in Ring, it could have been by Ray Mitchell, who said the Gant fight was close and Gant did have reason to complain as it was close, but he stated that he couldn't understand why Gant was allowed to wear his protective cup so high. He said that it was way above Gant's waistband and it negated Thompson's usually good body work. Scartissue
