How effective would this be, if at all?

I feel that your shoulders would take a beating. But I'm sure it's not useless.

Agreed, also I highly doubt someone’s actually punching a bag with 50lbs dumbbells, surely not, I’m not Hercules but I know you’re a strong guy why don’t you try it? - Straight arming that much weight sounds like BS to me.

I could do it. But 50 pounds with the leverage of full extension of my arm would wreck my otherwise bullet proof shoulders. I do know that much.

Although it’s often parodied there is a definite truth to the notion men were simply tougher across the board the further back in time you go. I don’t know much about weights though as I’m cardio-oriented.

50lbs is roughly 22.5kg - sorry my brain is just wired to the metric system. That's a hell of a lot of weight to be throwing effective straights at a heavy bag. I just tried it with some 15kg weights (33lbs) - doable with some level of comfort but adding another 50% weight, I dunno how that would go. They obviously don't build tough men like they used to.

In theory, it would make you slower.

There's outliers that might respond to this type of training, but the risk/reward isn't worth it.

Hmmm I somewhat disagree. If you were to train yourself to apply a certain level of force to your punches then removing the added mass would theoretically make your punches quicker. Force (N) = mass (kg) x acceleration (m/s2). All things being equal if you wanted that heavybag to jolt the same it did when holding the weights then you simply hit it with the same level of force. The only way to make up for loss in mass is to add acceleration to the punches. In practice I'm not sure it would play out that way though.

Maybe we can do a BF24 experiment - I nominate @Fergy and @Seamus to be the guinea pigs along with myself.

Maybe the 50 pounds was the combined weight of both dumbbells (25 pounds each)? That would make it more believable and sensible.

Heenan had reportedly remarkable speed in the ring for a man of his size and strength, in camp he would be described as sprinting “as fast as a deer.” It’s clear his speed didn’t suffer from doing this exercise

Lemme try it when I get home, I’ll report my findings I’m young and my shoulders won’t turn to dust.

I do 90 pounds each hand for 8 reps on the incline regularly with no issues. But the thought of 50 extended horizontally, especially on the pull back... nah.

in general, yes, but 50 lbs is too much, and the force you're having to covercome isn't limiting you horizontally, it's bearing down on you from above, creating a shearing force on the shoulder.

I always leave room for outliers in fitness, but 50 lbs would alter your mechanics in throwing punches.

If I was going to add resistance to punches the anchor point would be behind me, not above.

Just my opinion. Lord knows I'm wrong quite a bit, but this just seems like a bad idea.

You want to add weight, do 5 lbs at the most.
