Of course I give him a chance. But when he doesn't want to pick up a garbage belt from a weak belt holder, he has to work on his physical assets. Not necessarily until he has a chiseled body, but at least in a professional manner. I am sure that Wegener will get him there, he is not the type of person who lets his fighter be lazy.

However, this overhyping someone who wins has to stop. Helenius is not a bigger puncher than Wlad or the old Vitali just because he made a limping Brewster go down. Haye is a puncher. Brewster is a puncher. Abraham is a puncher. Helenius is a strong guy with 243lb behind his punches, but you can see he doesn't blast his opponent when connecting, like a McCall did. Or a Virchis, who breaks skulls with a punch that connects.

Helenius has a future, and most of all, he has some understanding of what to do in the ring, and what not to do. He has fundamentals, keeps cool under pressure, knows a bit of defense (he will need it once his opponents are top 5), and has some punch variety. He still has to develop his physical tools, otherwise someone like Klitschko, or a peak Brewster type, would take him apart with his physical superiority.

While Helenius is a tad stiff, you have to like his upside. Simply stated he's a big man with some skills. If he takes a good punch, he could be serious contender.

I think Helenius has already shown us more than Vircshis, Bidenko, and Krasniqui. Those guys seemed to be regional euro champions at best.

Watch what Krasniqi did to a much, much better version of Brewster until his pride got the better of him and he started to trade. Krasniqi at that time was a much, much better boxer than Helenius, his time as a sparring partner for lennox Lewis paid off. He just never had the mental tools to keep focussed in a fight, and heavyweight is the wrong division for such mistakes. Helenius with the speed of Krasniqi, or Krasniqi with the mental strength of Helenius would have been hard to beat.

The key for Helenius on his end is simply continuing to work hard, because right now his handlers are moving him along at the perfect pace for him. He's been doing that, and that's why he's already looking significantly better than he did when he debuted- even though that was still less than 2 years ago. If he keeps his nose to the grindstone and keeps getting better, we might just get to see a giant showdown between him and Wlad before Wlad hangs 'em up. You're correct though: there's still improvements to be made before we start thinking about Helenius at that level.

Long term, I foresee him being, at minimum, a legit title contender. I'll be surprised if he doesn't become a champion at some point in his career, though.

If he keeps in shape, he already has the tools to win a title, with a good enough output over 12 rounds. Just not with the current title holders, unless he gets lucky with Haye.

But in the future, I don't see why he couldn't become champ. Haye may be too fast for him, but down the ladder beyond #3, he should be able to beat anyone else on a good enough day.

I like Helenius from what I've seen so far. Decent jab, nice strong right hand & a good uppercut. I don't know how much of this fight was because Brewster has declined or whether Helenius is really that good. Time will tell. :thumbsup

    a few thoughts:

Brewster looked fat in the mid section.

Helenius looked much better than I thought he would his right hand over the top is pretty damn effective and awkward the way he throws it.

I'd heard of the hand issues as to why he went awhile before knocking people out, so the timing of it makes sense.

Perhaps Brewster should have drugged him?

It shows just how little Brewster has left.
