    Fellas and Vatos,

I just broke out my classic beatdown of the late great Sal Sanchez puttin' some ass-whuppin' on Wilfredo Gomez at 126 pounds in Puerto Rico back in 1981 off regular national TV with no added fee's...... Dem were the good ol' days......

Gomez was game, but never in the fight... Funny thing was, Gomez was a 4 to 1 favorite to take Sanchez' WBC title...... It didn't happen... Not even close....

Sal Sanchez proved to be too big, good and tough for the semi-tuned Gomez back in Aug. 1981..... Gomez had to lose "4" pounds after weighing-in at 130 pounds initially... BIG MISTAKE!

Still, overall, Gomez got dusted..... Sanchez simply too much of a skilled technician against Gomez......

I love reviewing this fight........ Larry Holmes was ringside and provided some commentary with Col. Bob Sheridan......

Holmes always knew what he was talking about.
He also gave a very good analysis for Spinks-Ali 2.

Nope. One of the most biased *******s I've ever listened to.
This guy was a good announcer too. I forget his name. Auther Micante? maybe?

I wouldn't say Gomez was never in the fight. The middle rounds were actually pretty close, and he even managed to hurt Sanchez on one occasion. You knew who the better man was throughout, though. In my opinion, Gomez was already starting to tail off as a technician toward the latter end of his 122 pound reign, and the jump up in weight certainly didn't help. Stalking and looking to bomb out a bigger, stronger, durable counter-puncher (who could really punch) like Sanchez was not the way to go. Unfortunately for Gomez, he figured Sanchez would've been just like all the rest. Wrong he was.

That was don dunphy who use to call Joe louis' fights. he also appeared on Ferdie Pacheco's round table of experts "fight of the century" in 1990 along with George Benton, Archie Moore, Angelo Dundee

Gomez wasnt in the fight becuz he tried to get too fresh with Sanchez too early and got his face broken in round 1 and wound up with severe facial damage, especially to the eyes

Off topic...... But I have a couple of different copies of "Leonard-Hearns 1" on tape. One tape is the HBO boys from 1981, minus Ray Leonard... The other tape is Donald Dunphy and Ferdie Pachecho...... Don Dunphy squawked loudly when Davey Pearl waived the fight over in round 14......... I love Dunphy, but he was outta line there..... IMO!!

Gomez was screwed with very high cheek-bones......... Swelling up high on the face and around the eyes was common for Gomez when his ass was being kicked.......

Yeah, the faster starting big punching Gomez got beat because he got aggressive early with the slower starting more cautious counterpuncher

isnt that what happend? Gomez had Sanchez on the ropes, they started trading and Sanchez got the better of him. he dumped Gomez within the first minute probably.

The rest of the round almost resembled Dempsey Willard

It was a beatdown..... Sanchez was just too big, strong and good at 126 pounds for Gomez........ In truth, Gomez never really looked all that great at weights of 126 to 130 pounds..........

The best Gomez ever looked post Sanchez was his 1984 beatdown of limited but hard punching Juanito LaPorte.....

Gomez got a gift over Rocky Lockridge in 1985 and his ass was handed to him by Al Layne in 1986......

Did Gomez stay at 122 too long? Toward the end Wilfredo had legendary struggles to make 122. The move up was inevitable. I believe he had 18 title defenses.
