If i ever bcome a boxer this is the first lesson i wanna learn following the footsteps of jmm! Any tips oh masters?
A lot of novice boxers tend to close the eyes with incoming punches...make sure you keep them open so you can try to elude the punches and come back with a counter. You have to remain calm in the pocket. This is a big one because you have to be able to relax and just let the punches go when he leaves himself open. If you are tense you won't be able to pull the trigger as quickly and you will tire out very quick. When you first learn to counterpounch keep it simple. Start out with countering with jabs and straights. Once you get your timing down you will be able to counter with hooks, overheand rights (if an orthodox fighter), uppercuts, etc. Make them miss and make them pay! I hate when I see a fighter constantly elude punches without throwing anything in return. Dont get me wrong, sometimes there are time when you dont have a good shot and shouldnt counter...but for the most part if you make them miss you usually have an opening. So I guess what Im trying to say is an improved defense can pay dividends with countering. Practice slipping and coming back with diff. punches. These are just some basics that you can work on.
so true. I can remember when I did this, and it sucked because I'm naturally a counter puncher. In response to the original question, I'm not sure what you meant, but I wouldn't try to copy any boxer. As for counter punching, sometimes you want to give your opponent an illusion, for example, back up like you are scared to engage, thus letting them come in, then dodge their punches and counter. a very important thing is to watch your opponent's shoulders, not his face, gloves, etc. this way you will see punches coming. it kind of comes down to being able to get a feel for his rhythm, and just being precise with your punches. and footwork is a must.
