I watch MMA, i'm interested but I got quite a few questions that some of you gents might be able to answer. Answers to one or all are welcome!

1 - I've never even handled MMA gloves. What are the major differences between punching wearing these and boxing gloves? I'd prefer it if only guys who have experience punching with both would answer. Thanks.

2 - Just watched Rampage Jackson fight Forrest Griffin in 88. Very good fight. Jackson is the best puncher I have seen in MMA so far, what other great punchers are there? Guys who can punch in combinations with proper positioning etc.

3 - Are headbutts now banned? Last time I watched it seriously, they were at about #11 and the Gracies were still running the show.

4 - Are there great counter-strikers yet? Who are they? I haven't seen a lot of counter striking yet.

5 - What are the "must see fights" from the last five years?

6 - Is there a pound for pound argument in MMA? Who are the best pound for pound fighters in the history of the sport?

7 - Any babes? How big are the women's divisions?

    Hello McGrain :hi:

You'll get good answers for the other stuff so I thought i'd just address this one: its not that there are not a lot of guys in MMA who cant throw combinations like a boxer, its that the rules and tactics of the sport just dont allow it.

Assuming our would-be combination thrower wants the fight to be standing - he cant just plant his feet and reel of a 6 punch combo - it leaves him far too vulnerable to be clinched and/or taken down. As for positioning, you cant stand in that side-on classical boxing stance when your lead leg can be kicked or grabbed.

Some good boxers in MMA, imo:
BJ Penn, great natural athlete, good at basically anything
    Sergei Kharitonov
Rogerio Nogueira (is representing Brazil in the Olypics in boxing, I think...)
Andre Arlovski - very fast and athletic 240lber, is currentl thinking of having some boxing matches I believe.

Its already been mentioned that its just 4 ounce gloves that do enough just to protect the hand. Some big differences though are of course the fingers are open so its easy as hell to poke a man in the eye. Also its quite difficult to wrap your hands then put these style gloves on. I never use these gloves unless its a fight.

2 - Just watched Rampage Jackson fight Forrest Griffin in 88. Very good fight. Jackson is the best puncher I have seen in MMA so far, what other great punchers are there? Guys who can punch in combinations with proper positioning etc.

Anderson Silva,BJ Penn,Takanori Gomi to name a couple.

3 - Are headbutts now banned? Last time I watched it seriously, they were at about #11 and the Gracies were still running the show.

    Yes.

4 - Are there great counter-strikers yet? Who are they? I haven't seen a lot of counter striking yet.

    BJ,Anderson,Chuck Liddell,Lyoto Machida ETC.

5 - What are the "must see fights" from the last five years?

Heres a few although theres a **** load Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva,Wanderlei Silva vs Rampage Jackson 2,Forrest Griffin vs Stephan Bonnar 1,Jens Pulver vs Hayato Sakurai,BJ Penn vs Matt Hughes 2,Frank Trigg vs Matt Hughes 2,Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Josh Barnett 1,Fedor Emeliaenko vs Kevin Randleman.

6 - Is there a pound for pound argument in MMA? Who are the best pound for pound fighters in the history of the sport?

Best all time is Fedor id say the closest to him all time are Randy Couture,Dan Henderson,Anderson Silva,Frank Shamrock,BJ Penn,Chuck Liddell,Kid Yamamato,St.Pierre,Matt Hughes,Nogueria.

7 - Any babes? How big are the women's divisions?

I think the womens divison that Gina Carano and Cyborg are going to fight in for the Elite XC belt are like 135-145.

1 ) i've tried them but only in sparring sessions. Like quebecwarrior said...the big difference is that they're much more lighter. These things are designed with grappling in mind that's why it is also easier to hurt your fingers. (It's not just the size..)

2 ) Today , best ones in the striking department are...Melvin Manhoef ,Kid Yamamoto , Anderson Silva , Takashi Gomi.

    Manhoef in action

    Kid Yamamoto

    Anderson Silva

    Gomi

Best Striker ever in mma (most powerful , accurate , fastest) used to be Filipovic. But he's more of a "has been" now. He used to be ranked at the # 2 spot , today , he's not even ranked in the top 10.

But , here is a prime Filipovic.
    [yt]ABS4eUwhNyA[/yt]
at 3:04 in the video , resumes perfectly how dangerous and fast he used to be. (and with his kicks no less)

    3) headbutts used to be allowed several years ago. (back in the 90's) But they're strictly banned now

    4) Kid yamamoto , Anderson

    5) Depends what you're looking for.

6 ) the best one in this sport. (the equivalent of Nadal or Federer if you will)
    Is a HW. Him...

I guess Anderson Silva is the most impressive fighter i've seen, though I need to see more off Fedor.

    Silva's a beast though.

Using the MMA gloves are almost like punching with bag gloves on. You can get a more solid hit than with large boxing gloves. Thet're a pain in the ass for submission fghters however as opponents often use the gloves to maintain a grop to prevent submissions.

Sergei Kharitonov possesses exemplary boxing skills.

Yes. headbutts are banned all over the world except in Brazil.

One of the best counterpuncehers in MMA is Aleks Emelianenko. I think the best counterstriker in the sport is Cung Le. Cung is a striker using kick and punch combinations as opposed to boxing combos.

Anderson Silva vs BJ Penn vs Fedor Emilianenko vs Randy Couture.

Gina Carano is women's MMA. Beautiful and deadly all at the same time.
