Leonard vs. Shields - October 1978

Has anyone got clips of this or the full fight?

Seems notiously difficult to pin down. Spoke to Leonard on Twitter yesterday and he insists it was televised.

    Never appears on career sets.

Just find it mega weird. Shields was a really good contender and you would have thought ABC, HBO or CBS would have picked this up?

Ray is convinced it was televised and I can understand his reasoning. Every other fight he had was?

Cuevas-Shields was on closed-circuit. Perhaps Leonard-Shields was too.

Shields-Hearns is one of my favorite fights. Guy had a chin made of steel.

I remember Shields talking about it later and how Hearns tried to stare him down and he had to do all he could do to stop from breaking out laughing -- like, what, I'm supposed to be scared that you're going to hit me? I figured that out when I got into boxing.

    Truly underrated fighter.

All Randy Shields lacked was a punch.

From the little comment Ray made in his autobiography, he felt it was a real close fight.

Didn't Shields hold a win over Leonard in the amateurs?

Yeah, 1973 National AAU finals, something like a 3-2 decison.

:good. Good win, I think Leonard was 145-5 as an amateur.

Shields also fought Hearns, and did well even thou he lost, probaly one of the most under-rated fighters the last 40 years, the guy was a scrapper but always seem to come up short...

He was from Hollywood California, not exactly a boxing strong point, like Detroit, or Philly, being a blond kid with muscles he probaly would have been better off going into acting..

with the exception of the Duran fight, Shields might be the most impressive performance of Benitez career.

    LittleRed said apropos of nothing.

Randys 15 Rnd fight vs Cuevas was a extremely gallant effort and made for a primetime broadcast. Alas it wound up lost.

What's amazing to me is that he was decked and hurt by Benitez but was never dropped or even really hurt by Leonard, Hearns or Cuevas.

Benitez reportedly did not telegraph his shots unlike the other three, but Randy would be the best one to verify that. Wilfredo was also on the front foot when he did it with Shields, and if you tried to get cute with Benitez by making him come forward and stalk, or box in ring center, you could find your head knocked off [Hope], or turned into a bloody mess [Johnny Turner, who tried to play cute instead of being the bomber he was].
