Help! Weight train or not.

    Hello everyone I am now 120 pounds, and Im more a speedy fighter and I just started boxing. I go to the boxing gym 4-5 days a week, 3-4 hrs training each days and I wanna add strength/power training for 2 days in a week, I cant add 3 days as I think I need at least 1 day a week to rest. I wanna increase my explosive power (speed+strength) without affecting my endurance, stamina or my "wind". So here's are some questions.
    1. Should I weight training or stick with calisthenics like other boxers in my gym do?
    2. What exercises should I do?
    3. Should I build a strength base first with like 5x5 with medium to heavy weight or start off with power training like 3x3-5 with heavy weight?
    4. Should I add plyometrics with my strength/power training to increase my speed?

    To be honest i think you're over training. 3-4 hours is a LONG time even for bodybuilders. Id cut that down by half ( 1-2 hrs MAX). The reason being is you can injure yourself or even lose muscle. As for your lifting I'd just find a good power routine. However i wouldnt replace that with calisthenics. Id make those your primary exercises and add some lifting in between or after. But im not a boxer just an aspiring one. Im giving you my knowledge based on what i know about fitness. Hope i helped and any boxers please correct me if im wrong ( as in based on facts ).

    no 3-4 hrs are boxing training not strength training

    Ah well thats another matter entirely.. I do know that Jun Fan (Bruce Lee) said that he felt slower at heavier weights. For the record he was 5'7" and 135 pounds at his peak and getting as high as 165. He always went for functional strength. Maybe do some research on Bruce ..

    I've heard some weird advice when it comes to weight training, but I've never heard someone recommend researching Bruce Lee before. :huh

    Bruce Lee's "style" was based on fencing boxing and its core was wing chun (style of kung fu). Bruce did thousands of sit ups not for the movies but because he believed it was a shield. He did body building as well as calisthenics. In fact he had roughly 2500 books and magazines on fitness and health. You can find quite a bit here of info here: http://www.mikementzer.com/blee.html
    Jun Fan (Lee) was all about perfection for the human form. He LOVED to fight and that was the reason he came to the USA (to protect him from the Hong Kong law with his fighting). He didnt care about how he looked only how he performed. :good

    Depends on what you call a win. Admiration from body builders about his abs. Admiration from people about his overall physical prowess. Various fights. My point about hin is Bruce was all about FUNCTION. Why does he have to win anything in order to learn from him?

    It's all well and good talking about function but winning something would have proved what he was all about. Yeah, he was unbelievably fast, flexible, strong for his weight etc but so what? He could do some party tricks... and?

    You do realize Bruce had some fights before he became famous and lost most if not all of them? Post up these "fights" you say he won.

    Yes i do realize he lost fights. But you also have to understand why JKD came out. He felt that in kungfu the stances were too confining. And to counter your demand post these fights you say he lost. Again this isnt about Jun Fan himself but his methods.

    This makes no sense. You know he lost fights, so now you tell me to counter your post with "post up these fights he lost". Why? You've just confirmed he lost fights, what would be the point of proving what you've already admitted to being true? :huh

    Anyway, this is getting waaay off topic but the point was he talked and made a name for himself on screen, but he never backed it up in actual fights and won anything. This I believe is what Scrap was referring to when he said "So what did He win". I could be wrong, but that's my point either way.

    Thats a good point to be Fair, I trained 2 World Karate Champs, they always said, it was through Bruce they started. Plus a good Pal of mine, was World Champ at Streaming, Stick Fighting, was taught by the guy who trained Bruce JKD and always speaks highly of Him. But He never competed as such.

    He has been in fights. He has lost. He has won. He was in a gang in Hong Kong. Im not claiming he was the best fighter. This isnt even about his fighting skill like everyone seems to be nakin it about. My point is you can improve yourself using his fitness methods. Am i gonna get arguments the guy was in insanely good shape too?:huh:lol:
