Ok so at the gym im sparring with a guy who is about my weight but he is very hard to hit because he use a lot of upperbody movement and lateral movement as well as in and outs. He isn't very offensive but he is frustrating me with all his defensive moves and i doN't know what to do to neutralize his movement and/or have the opportunity to let my hands go.

If you could give me some advice it would be great. Thx.

Try making him slip into something. Feint and see what he does. For example feint a jab, when he slips to the outside throw a left hook. Working the body is also good, followed by punches upstairs. A hook to the liver followed by a left hook upstairs, or whatever. A left hook upstairs, and when he ducks it throw a right hook downstairs (where his head will be at that moment). Be creative.

Work in behind the jab, push him backwards and start anticipating movements to one side or the other and looking to cut him off.

Agreed... Get him into a corner and work the body until he's less concerned with his head.

Yep. At least that's the best thing I've come up with against this type of fighter.

One other thing, at least against a couple of these sorts of fighters I've sparred with - I can often jab them to the body after letting them dodge a few jabs to the head. Sometimes you might be able to get a nice jab into their solar plexus because they're too busy leaning away and expecting you to target their head.

Sometimes guys who are slick move their upper body - but forget to move their legs. So double up, even triple up, the jab. When youre in range - punches in bunches. Easiest thing in the world is to slip one punch.. have two or three behind it, and things get a touch hairy. Don't give them the centre of the ring where they can move and make you look ordinary - put their back on the ropes.

If they bob and weave - jab at their chest, not at their head.. its ALOT harder to make miss. And throw more straight punches to their body then normal - I havent seen a fighter yet who can move their torso like they move their head.

Other then that, have the mindset that your going to punch alot of thin air.. but dont be discouraged.
