Roy was knocked down by Lou Del Valle who had a 61% KO rate. That is decent but not great the guy is not a "power puncher" so to speak. Tarver iced him with one punch. No debate there. He was then iced by Glen Johnson who had not KOed anyone worth a crap at Light Heavyweight the majority of his KO's were from Middleweight/Super Middleweight. Wlad was stopped by Purrity where he was supposedly exhausted. That excuse flys for David Haye against Thompson. He was floored 4 times against Sanders who has very good power. Brewster hit him with a hook where he did not go down the referee incorrectly gave a standing 8 count when it was not permitted in the fight. The round was over Wlad fell and it was stopped from there. To me Jones has the worse Chin by far he was not being hit by a Sanders or Brewster both who have pop plus he was out twice from one punch. Two of Wlad's 3 stoppages are from exhaustion or that is the majority or popular opinion whatever you want to call it. I would much rather be stopped by Brewster or Sanders than Johnson and Tarver. I am not saying Wlad has a good Chin. I am not saying he has a bad Chin. I am saying he has a better Chin than Jones who when he is tagged he is knocked out there is no getting up. Wlad has at least shown he can get up and continue,
SRL fought much better fighters in his career than Jones ever dreamed of fighting. SRL retired and came back getting KOed after a layoff Jones never did this and still got iced by two guys Leonard would have destroyed in his prime. You can't compare a fighter like SRL to Roy Jones. It is like night and day. One fought a bunch of great fighters one avoided fighters at every turn. You may have a point but you are going to have to pick a different fighter than SRL when making comparisons to Roy Jones. There is no comparison.
Thats fine, and yes Louis did hit the deck alot. Though did he ever get knocked out by a journeymen? No, Wlad has though. Louis was knocked out against Schmeling and Marciano, both of which are top quality opposition, and one is an ATG heavyweight he faced when he was well past his prime. If Wlad wasn't stopped by all 3 journeymen, then you would of had me beat, but he was.
Chef, I'm not trying to be disrespectful by any means, but I still think you're viewing this from the wrong perspective. No one can walk in with a new technique at 100%, it's gotta work itself out in the ring at some point, and I for one get nervous when Wlad is under pressure. He can tie up pretty good after an offensive maneuver, it's when he's backing up that the trouble begins. It's almost like he can't hang on at all going backward and his lateral movement is not there to side step the trouble. I wanted to see if anyone had some good ideas for sparring partners that are technically proficient inside and big enough to hold up to Wlad. Even just the wrestling part of it would help with clinching in bad situations, plus short shots to the head in sparring would eventually allow him to relax better, thus roll and take a shot better. The one fighter (and some will chastise me for this) that actually would worry me against Wlad is Ruiz. That tricky sucker always has something up his sleeve if he gets out of the first round. I'm sure Manny has it all under control, but this is a boxing forum ya' know.:yep
Oh, and SRL was 40 years old and coming off a 6 year layoff in the Camacho fight his ONLY KO loss. Jones was 35 and had no layoff. It is not even close to the same thing.
absolutely, he was only knocked out by great fighters but the idea that because Wlad was knocked down he has a glass chin is a fallacy. the fact that he kept getting up, like louis, means his chin is decent just not great
Neither Brewster or Sanders was anything special before they knocked out Wlad. So where was Sanders power against Rahman? Dont use the excuse he was out of shape either, he would of been blowing smoke if Wlad's glass chin didn't shatter in the 2nd round, probably by the middle rounds. So I guess Rahman's chin isn't as bad as Wlad's, they both took Sanders best shots, and only Rahman was left standing at the end. Johnson and Tarver are much better losses to have on your record than Brewster and Sanders. I think many people would agree with me there. Not to mention purrity. Many believe the ref saved Wlad, and by him giving him the standing 8, took precious time away from Brewster being able to for the knockout before the round was over.
Johnson and Tarver are much better loses to have but NOT by KO they aren't. Brewster can punch. Sanders can punch. Did Joe Louis have a Glass Jaw or Floyd Patterson? Both were knocked down by fighters much worse than Sanders or Brewster. Either way Wlad can at least get up where a fighter like Jones can't. Again, I am not saying Klitschko Chin is great ONLY that it is better than a guy like Roy Jones.
Bring it on.. You know Sanders was the only one to really TKO Wlad.. the Brewster- Purrity fights were gifts...due to exhaustion.. He's had to grapple with his confidence in himself because everyone wrote him off. I remember Atlas saying:"stick a fork in him after the Sanders fight. I remember Rafeal-who's he?- saying that Brewster really 'drilled him"..he's got a good chin, and now a good defense... and in the end, you guys lose...Derrick,Fighting-lite-weight, etal, lose again.
It's kind of a technicality though, isn't it? Some guys get hit, they go down immediately. Some guys, their legs wobble. Others stay standing, but slow down and eventually can't defend themselves. Wlad goes into a heart racing panic mode where he eventually gets so winded that he obviously can't defend himself, but he's still standing. If he's standing but in no shape to continue, how you can say his chin is solid? What I will say in his defense is that like another fighter who was not naturally relaxed in the ring, Oscar, he's made a massive stride forward staying calm under fire.
good analogy about oscar. i'm not saying that wlad has a solid chin BUT it's really underrated. I think it's a combination of bad nerves and bad chin. he doesn't wanna get hit and when he gets hurt, he reacts really badly. it's just that he's become the poster boy for bad chins and there's MUCH worse out there
