ok i have sparred twice now and each time i got whooped but im not complaining every time the guy bumrushes me how am i supposed to defend against this
Well firstly what's your style of fighting? Is he smaller? taller? What his strengths? punches he throws? hooks?
im about 5'6 -7 he is a little bit smaller than me and he is reall quick he is 16 im 14 and he throw hooks and lots of uppercuts i caught him once with a hard strait left
What stance is he? and what stance are you? Also what are your strength's and what style are you? Sorry to ask loads of questions but it makes it easier to vision what's going on and what advice to give.
Ok i'm thinking your orthodox? and he is? if so.... -Establish the Jab: Keep him occupied with it. Don't let him ''bumrush'' or march forward with ease make him earn the right to get inside range. Keep him at range as much as you can. Tuck chin down and throw a single and then step to side and then double. Mix the jab up sometimes drop it to chest and then back up (depending on confidence to) -Lateral Movement: I presume he comes in straight lines and likes to set feet and blast?. Work the jab and step to your right/his left and make him pick his feet up. Don't get yourself to near ropes try work in middle of ring so your not to close to ropes and getting trapped. Some fighters give up to much space and get near ropes where they don't feel at ease with and panic. Don't allow him to trap you. Small steps back and lead him onto shots. -Keep Him Turning!:If when you lead off he covers up and takes shots on gloves. Throw a combination (simple to start off with) and then get off at an angle so he can't come back but when you get away try to come away so that he's turning body to come back at you. By doing this your walking him onto punches. -Lead off:Try use some simple feints as if your gonna throw. Whether it be upper body feint or a foot feint just keep him thinking! and then lead off at range. -Don't like inside fighting?:If you don't feel comfortable on the inside don't stand there covering up. Look to smother his work by closing distance on him so he can't get leverage or clinch and walk him back if your bigger and stronger. So all in all use simple boxing to deal with him. Keep it very basic and use his aggression against him by walking him onto shots and he will soon get reckless and open up wildly and you counter him at range with pot shots.
Ok and he's orthodox? If so work that southpaw jab and keep your right foot on the outside of his left foot and circle to your right. Jab, Jab, Left hand and then move away..
If you want to get away from him, stick him with a hard straight left. Vary it. One time it can be a straight left, one time a left uppercut, one time a left hook. Then follow with a right hook, but throw it at/behind his shoulder and pivot. Throw him off balance and to the side, then reset and do it again. If you like the inside, or if the above isn't clicking for you, just get your hands up and ram into him and try to walk him back. Try to get your left hand to the body working and he'll think twice about rushing in. Always use your right hook. You can spin orthodox fighters around all day with that, especially if they rush/lean forward. You don't have to punch with it, you can just grab their shoulder and shove them aside. Do it enough and he'll have to react top it, and you'll start seeing openings for followups. But for now just focus on throwing him off balance and making him look silly. This should calm him down and make him more hesitant to rush you. Don't forget to hit him hard when you hit him.
What you do is basically a 90 degree spin and nail him. Try to follow me here---If you are right handed, you have your left foot out front and right foot behind you, left hand more forward in a jabbing position, just the opposite if you are left handed in most cases. Lets say your lead (left) foot is at 12 o'clock and your right foot is around 4 o'clock and behind you. Now, as the guy rushes you, pivot about 90 degrees on your left foot so it faces 3 o'clock and your right foot swings to around 7 o'clock and let a stiff left fly, catching your opponent on the side of the head. You can also swing in the opposite direction but this will make your right foot your lead foot facing 9 o'clock and your left behind you around 7 o'clock and you can catch your opponent with a straight right. This will temporarily make you a southpaw but it should confuse the guy bumrushing you long enough to resume your normal stance. It takes a little work to get fluid at this move to make it work for you. You may want to practice it to get fluid with it before using it on him. Now, if this guy is looking down when he rushes you, while facing him, try bending at the knee and crouching at the same time and fire a hard right into the solar plexus. That works wonders in taking an opponents breath away when done properly.
No problems. Try work on that stuff when you shadow box. Keep your calm under pressure (easy for me to say) but a calm head will do you good. Let us know how you do! and good luck :good. Ps. Right hook off the jab is a beauty for the southpaw against orthodox.
Pernell Whitaker vs Julio Cesar Chavez Watch way Pernell circles. In round 3 he really starts to box beautifully in offence and defence. Jab is crisp! and he keeps Chavez following onto shots.
