In very high regard by more than a few of boxings behind the scene guys. Charley Rose ranked him at #6 all time at Welter. Fleischer had him at #8 for Welter. Goldman, #8. It's just a contrast to how he's perceived here, where he tops a lot of peoples P4P lists, none the less welter ones. Have people come to appreciate him more with age? Do the older intellectual "elite" of the sport have it wrong?
the fact that he is even that high as ww is amazing-he was probably at his best at fetherweight or lightweight- I think he was probably no. 1 at featherweight and would have even given duran lots of trouble at lw
Top 5 at WW he should be pushed up and built up as much as Sam langford and Henry did more and actually won titles.
I personally don't consider Armstrong great at welter, but at lightweight/featherweight top 6-7 in history.
I would say it's because he wasn't known just for one division. the fact that he were up so high and weight was a testament to his greatness. To go from featherweight jump all the way up to welterweight then back down to lightweight was just incredible.
Well you have people like Bert Sugar ranking him second p4p, can't remember where Teddy Atlas ranked him, but I think it was also highly. It's not just fans who rank him so highly
