I already knew the outcome of this one. I knew Armstrong won, and I knew that he beat Ross to a pulp. However, getting to this point, if I had not known what took place historically, I would have thought Armstrong won by a rugged split decision. I mean, both men were machines in their prime. Armstrong was a relentless Frazier/ Marciano-type pressure fighter. Ross was a boxer, but a relentless one himself. He would stick his jab out there and keep it going for 15 rounds. And he could brawl with the best of them. I think a few years earlier and he would have given Armstrong a lot to handle.

This was not a good fight at all, and was repetitive, so I am going to score it, and maybe add some description, but in stages of the fight, rather than round per round.

    1. Even.
    2. Armstrong brought the fight inside. Even.
    3. Armstrong was going easy on Ross, who was already slowing. Armstrong.
    4. Ross was actually throwing solidly, but his best success of the fight was ended by a right hand. Ross landed well for a lot of it, but Armstrong hurt him late, so I was divided on who to give it to. Even.
5-15. Ross took a slow, systematic beating. Armstrong won every round with ease.

Verdict: The fight was terrible, just terrible. Armstrong was a wheel of constant motion of course, so it wasn't exactly as if it was dull. That left me with a profound question: do you boo or applaud a fight like this? Armstrong never stopped punching, but it was quite clear Ross had nothing left.
It was not one of Hank's best performances, or even wins imo (it is on paper though). I thought he took it easy on Ross, unless the weight differential was what slowed Armstrong down.
Ross looked awful. Nothing like when he fought McLarnin for the third time, just three years prior. The jab was gone. His speed was gone. Any power he once had was totally vanquished. He was not the machine-like man he once was. Instead, he was a slow, plodding, lethargic fighter. A terrible sight to see. I was glad that Armstrong didn't try too hard to knock Ross out.
While I am aware this was a significant match, I see no point in watching it. It's not one of Armstrong's best performances, and it's sad to watch. Skip it.

Just goes to prove, one mans meat, is another mans poison !!
For me, I think it showed Armstrong in all his glory, a relentless, unremitting, implacable , fighting machine, and when you consider how much weight he gave away ( not for the first time in WW title fights ) it looks even more impressive, must be in everyone's top 5, no arguments please. keep well.

Passing of the torch fight... Ross fought hard and did Ross things in the first couple rounds, then at some point realized that even his best shot on his best day would do nothing to slow Armstrong's assault. From then on out he looks like he's fighting under water... Sad for a great one to go out like that but it happens all the time.

What is Armstrong’s best performance? ...based on what you’ve seen ?

Anything but this. He looks great in the Arizmendi, Garcia, and Ambers fights. I haven't watched Armstrong in a long time, but I am again now, so once I've finished up, I can pick which fight I think is his best performance.

    Thanks for posting.

I wonder if this outcome was due to Ross going back, or just his running into a fighter with the perfect style to negate his talents. I think Ross's weakness was a lack of power and without power there was no way he could keep Armstrong off. One needs a punch to keep a swarmer off and Armstrong was probably the best swarmer of them all. With Armstrong on top of him all night, all Barney's boxing skills were useless.

Certainly a great performance by Armstrong.

Ross outpointed Canzoneri and McLarnin, but I think they would have had a better shot at Armstrong as each had more power. Such matchups would have been interesting.

    I'm thinking the same thing!

It's like how I view the Pacquiao-DLH fight. Was Oscar really shot to pieces - or did Pac simply represent a force he had no answer to? In the first round Oscar looked "normal", but after that Pac's relentless aggression took over. I have a feeling, that even the best version of DLH would have been battered by Pac... just like the best version of Ross would against Armstrong.

I heard that Armstrong carried Ross in that fight.
I liken Ross to a Phillip Holiday or a Barry Mcquigen type fighter...good, but not great.
The stories about his combat in ww2 are pretty amazing though, if accurately told.
He may not have been as great a fighter as propped up to be, but he was still a real life killer none the less and if his life depended on it in a back alley street fight there's no telling what he might be capable of doing

Personally I think it’s a bad idea for a fighter to carry an opponent...I can’t help but think about Emanuel Steward screaming at Lennox Lewis when he fought Mike Tyson lol
