Really was a phenomanal run, does anyone rate the quality of oposition? how many where top 10 ranked?.Howard Scott for instance had lost his last 6 bouts but Armstrong had only fought 4 days previous. Bobby Pacho had 54 losses. Is this quality opposition?.
What year are you referring to? Do you mean his featherweight, lightweight, or welterweight reign? The period when he defended lightweight and welterweight titles? I'll start with when he beat fellow ATG Barnie Ross for the welterweight title in may 1938. His next fight is against ATG Lou Ambers for the lightweight title. His next fight is a defense against ATG Ceferino Garcia. Two fights later in January '39 he's fighting HOFer Baby Arizmendi. These are all top ten guys he's defending against. Loses the lightweight title back to Lou Ambers that August. Keeps defending the welterweight title against somewhat weaker competition until he beats Ceferino Garcia again for the middleweight title in march 1940. Keeps defending the welterweight crown against guys I haven't heard of but who have good records until ATG Lew Jenkins that July, and loses his last belt in October to HOFer Fritzie Zivic.
Incredible run when you think about it,does anyone no if any of these opponents where top 10 ranked?Howard scott for instance had lost his last 6 bouts although Armstrong had only fought 4 days prior to facing him.Bobby Pacho had 54 loses, where these worthy title challengers?.
The second Ceferino Garcia fight was a 10 round draw, for the California MW Title omly....not for a "World Title" being the NYSAC didn't recognize it as such, being only a 10 rd fight.
For those interested, a biography on Lew Jenkins just hit the bookshelves. https://www.amazon.com/Boxing-Ring-...qid=1541357479&sr=8-2&keywords=gene+pantalone
