Enjoying Cooper's bio .. in it he clearly states that Patterson had greater hand speed than Ali .. Ali had faster over all movement and his size was terrific but for pure hand speed he was clear that it was Floyd, something I agree with based on the films I have seen ...

    Thoughts ..

Fair point but I believe Floyd's injury played into that ..

Injury or not Floyd wasnt hurting in both shoulders. Floyd was a class act and a great fighter without a doubt...but his speed doesnt surpass Ali's speed.

:dealCoop should know he was in the ring with both of them, I believe it...
Ali, or when he fought Coop he was clay, was just so much harder to fight because he was a bigger, stronger, tougher man, compared to Floyd...
Look at the Liston fights, Patterson was scared shitless of Sonny, and Ali beat his ass..

I agree. I always felt Patterson was faster. But not by much.

I think it depends on the punch who was faster. But even with Patterson's skills, he could not approach Ali's size, toughness, & greater foot speed.

Patterson was scary fast, even in slow motion with real, corectly thrown punches. ALI was was fast but when he let go to spray the fast ones they were not hooks with leverage like Floyd did. Fast does not mean better though. ALI was better because he was harder to beat and always confident. Floyd could be hot and cold.

Henry was right. Patterson had a very good night against Henry. He was quite unlucky to get such a red hot Floyd.

Henry certainly didn't see the right hand that Floyd flattened him with, so he's probably a bit bias!

I think that Ali , with his size, reach and movement was a faster moving target but for pure hand speed in bursts of combinations it's clearly Floyd. We've heard Ali say it so often that it's almost taken as law but it's really not the case ..

Don“t think so. Ali was faster in his hands than Robinson, He was faster than Patterson. But Patterson was fast as well.

Muhammad and Floyd were undoubtably the fastest punching heavies ever. Hard to tell which one had the edge.

Patterson was not faster than Ali in my opinion.
If you watch footage of both of them then Ali's hands look definitely faster.

But what kind of punches were they? Ali moved his hands fast but they were not corect punches. They landed, they confused people enough to shelter from them but they were shoe shine assaults. ALI had incredible accuracy and was a big man so it worked for him. But let's not call them punches. Shoe shining and punches are two separate issues.

Patterson had faster hands in much shorter bursts. And they were real textbook punches. His work rate could not match Ali but when he let go the sequence of blows from Floyd were faster and better quality.
