I seem to remember reading that despite the reputation for being a bleeder he only actually lost a few fights due to cuts? I think it was in England's Boxing Heroes book I got recently and need to dig out to double check. I think the horrifying pictures of his face after the Ali fight have exacerbated this myth. But maybe totally wrong so need to check.
He was European level and lower top 10 contender who was generally stopped when he stepped up to fight the top guys. Patterson, Johansson and Folley all knocked him out although he holds a decision over Folley his best win. He defeat to Bugner was no robbery it was simply a very close fight and could have gone either way whoever lost was unlucky. His fundamentals were sound a good jab and the left hook was a genuine weapon and he always gave his all, despite what some say about his reaction to the Bugner defeat he was a gentleman.
An incredibly bitter man. Green with envy and sick as a parrot, Cooper quit as a pundit on the night Bruno lifted a world title to rapturous applause, fireworks, a sea of confetti, and of course the sounds of Land Of Hope And Glory. Cooper probably killed his gerbil that night.
