Among British heavyweights,Lennox Lewis is clearly the best ever. Cooper and Bruno, though, were probably the most iconic. Who wins this clash of British institutions ?
In coopers day you had to beat an at that time rated fighter to get a rating and keep winning against contenders to preserve your spot. Bruno was around when you got a spot in the ratings for being unbeaten against fighters no longer in the ratings. cooper was way more seasoned and over all had more competative fights taking on a number of his toughest opponents a number of times. He was always the same fighter win or lose where as Frank was bionic unless he felt the presure of the big ocasion. against a guy he did not respect Frank would tear them a new ass hole in double quick time. Bruno was like sonny liston when the presure was off. BRUNOS best wins were ollie mccal, scott ledoux, coetzee, tillis, jesse ferguson, truth wiliams, lucien rodriguez, bugner, jose ribalter and pierre coetzer. Coopers best wins against rated fighters were #1 foley, miteff, bethea, roy harris, hubert hilton, mildenburgeer, london, dick richardson, erskine, bodel, jose urtain. its 50-50 unless frank is in a bad mood.
I tend to favor size and strength. I think Frank would bust him up, knock him out. He'd be unafraid of Cooper.
Bruno had A class power but was C class in every other department, I'd put put Cooper firmly in the B class all round area but he'd have trouble with the jab and would probably be stopped on cuts per usual, although he could KO Bruno if he landed the hammer.
Henry Cooper was a game fighter with a lot of tricks up his sleeve, but I can't see him as being very effective against Frank Bruno who was miles ahead of him in physical athleticism.. As much as I hate to do this to Henry, I have to throw this one into the "mismatch" file..
Henry got bombed out by Patterson but other than cuts gave a good account of himself with Ali and a Big Bugner. Bruno very strong but stiff, I could see Bruno cutting Cooper with the jab or stopping him but I could also see it the other way around. Henry had power in his hook and Frank did get KO'd a few times...this is a competitive fight or a bloody stop loss for Henry or a KO and that could go either-way
They both failed at the elite level, but there is no shame in that. bruno did not come through very many competative fights. He was nursed along against faded fighters who he was too strong for then crumbled badly at his own level past the 5 round point. Cooper was a genuine 15 round fighter who comfortably won a lot of competative fights at the level frank struggled at.
The fascinating style issue comes up,does n't it ? Cooper gave a good account of himself against Muhammad Ali,twice. Bruno, several notches below Muhammad in class, could stop Henry quicker than Muhammad could, but Ali would have found Frank far easier to deal with than Cooper.
