Cooper didn't beat Bugner,it was just there was lots of sentiment and sympathy around for the old fella at the time.I admired Henry, but he wouldn't have gone past 5 rounds with Lyle.
Lyle couda, wouda, stopped Cooper. But certainly not etched in stone. Foreman was a brain-dead mess when he fought Lyle. As a previous poster said, outside of Shavers (who would have laid Lyle out for a ten count had his left hook landed prior to the END of the 2nd in their scrap) what contender did Ron every KO? This may well have been an interesting bout.
Lyle would KO Cooper, without much trouble, either. Cooper did not take a heavy punch well, and was nearly 30 lbs lighter and 2 inches shorter than Lyle. Lyle, much stronger than Cooper, would have dominated on the inside. Also, Lyle was probably more athletic and a better boxer than Cooper, and would have gotten the better of the action in center ring (just watch Lyle's fight with Ali for evidence). I can't picture Henry surviving long in this one.
Well stated. Bugner-Cooper was close enough to have gone either way legitimately. I had Bugner winning narrowly (although my copy of the film is ****), and The London Times had Bugner winning too.
Bugner claims that Lyle was one of the hardest punchers he ever faced. I'm inclined to believe Bugner, who fought and sparred with nearly everyone.
