Inspired by the mention of Louis-Farr fight (on the Lewis-Mavrovic thread) how would this battle of Britain HW matchup go?
Whilst I think Farr beats him too, Cooper was sure a notch or three above the likes of Bugner, London, Dunn and maybe even Bruno too. Farr wins (probably mid-late on cuts) but in a more competitive fight than what you envisage.
Yep. No way the gulf between 'em is that drastic IMO. Farr would stop him I think (and be a few points ahead on the cards), but Coopers respectible power gives him a chance (especially the left-hook). Cooper was actually reasonably durable and had a good chin: it was his weak tissue that was often a problem.
certainly not a mismatch.however i think a teak tough farr would simply be too persitent for cooper, not even henry's famous hammer would dent farr, who took louis' best shots.farr by ud or late stoppage on cuts.
But it is. Compare their resumes. It honestly isnt close. Cooper was a commonwealth grade fighter who had a couple of solid wins but generaly lost at world level. Farr was a world class fighter who beat other world class fighters and former world champions. He was the fourth best heavyweight walking around when he fought Louis for the title and he might just have been champion if Louis had fallen under a bus. Farr is the best British heavyweight of the period between Bob Fitzsimmons and Lennox Lewis and not by a particularly fine margin.
it isn't close? well i wouldn't know about that.many judge farr mainly from his magnificent effort against the brown bomber, but his record against other world ranked heavies isn't much better than coopers.his only real win of note was against the inconsitent max baer who'd already been demolished by louis.in fact coopers best win against a prime zora folley i would rank higher.true cooper was ko'd in a return by folley and also patterson, and johansson.however farr lost a return with baer and was beaten by braddock, nova and burman.
Coopers best win is Folley, is this controversal? Folley won in 2rounds in the rematch. Coopers fights at world level saw him stopped in the early-mid-rounds against Ali, Folley, Johannson and Patterson, plus he openly avoided Liston, Williams and Chuvalo
