He was a very aggressive and wild smaller guy with very fast and explosive hands and a terrible chin. Robney mentioned he was like Haye which is a good comparison. He was Haye without the PR or charisma (not that I think Haye is particularly likeable but Hide struck me as a straight out psychopath) and his chin was IMO even worse. He'd often go down from really innocuous glancing blows and look totally rattled and out of it. He could also seriously rock almost anyone he landed on. To call him a glass cannon would be an understatement. He was a papier mache howitzer. A balsa wood ballistic missile.
He admitted in the Hws he used tricks to look heavier at the weigh-in. If he really weighed more he could have done more than what he did.
I recall watching Hide/Bowe on terrestrial TV in the UK. They tried to make him out to be Holyfield with serious power. He was small for a heavyweight, he was a natural cruiserweight when cruiserweight was at 190lbs, but he had serious heavyweight power and had very fast hands and feet. But he was a glass cannon, he'd knock you out or get knocked out, his defence was non existent and left his chin up in the air a lot of the time. He apparently wasn't a particularly nice guy, was known of beating up and knocking out sparring partners. Had a lot of trouble with the law too, from being accused of **** and also being sent to prison for selling cocaine.
A bit of an enigma. He had very fast hands, could obviously punch but was weak mentally also IMO (to a point) and his chin gave way far too often from seemingly innocuous punches. The ups and downs against Chingangu sum up the latter part of his career when he had Crocodile Fitch as his cheerleader. Great to watch however and could end a fight in an instant.
Similar career to David Haye. Natural CW with huge power, but was a bit outsized at HW. His later career was beset with inactivity...also like Haye.
I just remember him making a return a few years back fighting a load of bums in Germany but not doing much else and then retiring
Bowe then let Hide hit him over and over again in the first few rounds. Boxers really do talk nonsense. I do wonder if those shots played a big part to Bowe's brain damage.
He wasn't able to get Hide's weird timing down, which to be fair not a lot of HWs could do including Vitali. Hide was so explosive he could look like he wasn't in a position to launch a fight ending punch and then the next instant you were seeing stars.
Hide was a very explosive guy who could punch with both hands. He was always in shape too. He had the horrible combination of a weak chin and no defense though. I’ve always liked Hide, he had a really unorthodox style that made his offense unpredictable and fun to watch. I think he was as good as he could’ve been though. If he worked on his defense he may have avoided a loss or two but he just didn’t have the chin to compete with the elites
