Here is how Moore said he would have fought Michael Spinks

So ... like Archie Moore, then?

 

It sounds like he was underestimating Spinks’ capability on the inside, as he absolutely could generate devastating power on the inside too.

If he truly did go into the fight believing Spinks had nothing on the inside, he could end up eating something devastating.

Spinks was highly skilled on the outside and on the inside, and he’d absolutely go on the inside when it made sense to in fights.

He shortened up his punches efficiently, and generated power in doing so. He could nudge opponents on the inside to create space, he could go to the body and come over the top with chopping right hands, he could do a lot on the inside. We even saw it against Holmes.

 

It's a great strategy in theory, but executing it is something entirely different. Qawi was able to get under Spinks jabs and range and even managed a knockdown, but fell short on the scorecards. I believe Moore has the skills and experience to pull it off, but I don't know if he wins. I can see this being a trilogy where they each win one and the third is anyone's guess.

Qawi was standing on his foot, the KD was bogus. Qawi didn't get in close often enough.

 

This would have been a great fight. If Archie succesfully closes down the distance he wins,but it will be a close one either way.

 

Only one problem Spinks would be too fast and flexible for him. Spinks would fight from where he wanted to be.

 

The best fighters know how to control range and always keep their opponent in the distance they want them in. Archie was an expert at that. As was Spinks. Would be a great game of chess. People talking about Spinks power don’t forget Archie was packing heat too

 

I don't think he is underestimating him but mapping out the best possible way to beat him.
