I'm past the point of talking about Forbes being more suited for 140. It's about seeing competitive fights and this fight had all the makings of being a snoozefest the moment it was made. Only Forbes' durability made it credible. Frankly, I would have preferred to see Berto take on someone like Baldomir. Berto would probably outbox him and cruise to a decision but it wouldn't be an easy one as Baldomir's a tough nut to crack. Would have been good for Berto's learning curve but instead they chose a little guy who, like in the DLH fight, had no real chance of winning. HBO has to do a better job than this, especially if they want to invest anything in Berto.
forbes 2 me seems like he can still go, 147 is entirely too big for him. he should definitely go 2 140, if he can beat 1 or 2 contenders. Im sure he could get a title shot.
It seems like in the last few fights I've seen him in (Bojado, Oscar, Hopkins and Berto) once things start going tough for him, he goes into sparring partner mode. He becomes a good sparring partner for the guy he's facing and more or less mails it in. Around round 8, he just was happy to give Berto an occasional thing to think about and finish the fight. Sparring partner mentality.
Forbes has earned his spot as a trial horse for prospects and up & comers. If you're coming up and need to get in some rounds, Forbes will deliver. He won't KO you and he'll make you work. He's a classy guy and I'm glad he's getting some good money fights in the sunset of his career.
After Contender I really, really wanted him to stay focused on 140. He could've put together a couple of good wins in the time he's wasted giving DLH and Berto a reason to pat themselves on the back, and we could be looking at a very cool showdown with him and Bradley. :-( Oh well, shoulda coulda woulda.
He will become a gatekeeper now. He's a Peter Buckley sort of fighter. Durable and good defensively and therefore a good test for anyone who wants to get some rounds in. All though of course he's a lot, lot better than Buckley. And a better name to have on your record.
Let's not forget your hero Cotto made a career fighting smaller former ex champions. Hell he outweighed Corley by 17 POUNDS!
That's what it was suppose to be.. Forbes would be better off fighting at 140, but I don't mind seeing him fight at all.. I respect the dude a lot and it does try to give it his all.. He may be out-powered or out-skilled, but he still puts up a fight.. He's got some heart..
