Here's how 225 pound, modern day HW Ray Mercer would've stopped 210 pound 1966 Ali

Mercer would ceaselessly appeal to the city to put stop signs at the end of Ali's street thus forcing him to stop every time Ali would operate his motor vehicle.

In this fight, I envision a shutout with Ali winning the vast majority of rounds as Ali would have no problem finding Mercer who would be a virtual punching bag. The rounds Mercer may win would be more of a case of Ali losing them than Mercer winning them. That is, Ali may get lazy and give a few rounds away. Or perhaps, a late round TKO if Mercer's face becomes very swollen.

Does anyone see it differently or perhaps can make a case for Mercer stopping prime Ali?

I think it might go something like this little known bout between a heavyweight and a middleweight. The middleweight's hand speed and combinations make all the difference.

Just look at that flurry he throws in round three. (Time stamp 2:18 if you want to skip ahead.)
Damn...Kind of reminds me of how Ali took out Brian London.

I actually read this thinking it was going to be a serious thought out post... And how someone actually thought Mercer would beat Ali?? Scratching my head a little

Yeah, it's puzzling but I don't mind too much. It gave me an excuse to post another badass Buddy Rich clip.
In related news, ground beef is on sale at Ralphs for 3.99 a pound.

Seriously though, I think (?) the quip about the stop signs was meant to be interpreted as scoffing at the very idea that Mercer would ever have any chance of "stopping" Ali.

Dunno. Maybe because no one in the 60s hit Ali as hard as Mercer would've? He would have been a bigger puncher than Cooper.

I'd say that's true only in the most literal sense. Cleveland Williams and Sonny Liston very likely hit at least as hard as Mercer, *but they didn't hit Ali*.

Come to think of it, Mercer probably wouldn't either.
1967 Ali is not 1992 Holmes. This one is not a tough call.

Oh mercer was definitely more heavy handed than Cooper, but I have the picture in my mind of a old Larry Holmes beating Ray quite easily. So I can see Ali doing the same but faster, his jab would have mercers face swollen by the middle rounds. Great chin and jab and fantastic reflexes made Ali very difficult to beat, and even if knocked down, he had the heart to climb up.

Yer, I get the joke behind it, the title threw me though. I actually thought the op was throwing something out that we'd all missed! And that mercer could really beat Ali in to the ground lol.

Yeah Mercer is forever tainted by that loss to old Larry Holmes. Soon as anyone matches him up with anyone who's not a slugger, someone will soon bring out that loss against old Holmes.

Hahaha, I've already outed the OP as an alt of Fergy. They have the same IP address and now he goes and makes this thread to make it look as if it's not him.

    Oh dear..

Holmes just did the same thing Damiani did but avoided getting caught. Damiani was outboxing Ray every round and you can bet the ranch Holmes watched and scouted that fight.
