Modern refs could learn from the way the old timers let fights go to their NATURAL conclusion! [yt]ezLbrjlyTuQ[/yt]
Zakman, I hope you're not serious. That fight looked much worse than the beatdown Cooney put on Norton. You have to stop the fight when the fighter is not defending himself. Otherwise it's not boxing - it's one guy beating the **** out of the other guy.
You saw Machen, he was fine. Today's refs are squeamish, indeed our whole society has gotten feminized. Afraid of man to man combat. There is instance after instance of fights being stopped prematurely today. Refs wave off fights when one guy is actually still standing, sometimes. It wasn't like that in the old days. They let men FIGHT! And let fights go to their natural conclusion. Even worse, boxing fans cheer this. Commentators whine like little girls to stop fights. In the old days fans got PISSED when refs pulled the plug too early.
The knockdown happens at 3:10 in this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQzXjMmb7w0 I've got to say, Santore ****ed up the proceedings badly. His count wasn't steady, he never tested Cintron's gloves, he never looked him in the eye, and then he half-heartedly waved it off as if he didn't know what else to do. None of this absolves the Frog from acting like a complete *****, and being so unaware in the ring that he actually thought a straight left was a butt, however the ref didn't have a clue how to handle the situation. Cintron did technically beat the count, and because Santore was essentially hoping at that point that he wouldn't, since he didn't know what to do, chaos ensued. Commissions, train your ****ing refs.
Then you had that other fight before that where they pulled the plug prematurely and the commentators were whining for minutes before that to stop it! That's one of the things that inspired me to make this thread. Then I was looking at some old fights and remembering how it used to be when I was growing up, and I found this one. A little bit before my time, but even when i was a kid your didn't have the ridiculously early stoppages - or the whining commentators - you have now.
Ridiculous thread, thank god that is no longer how it's done. I hate premature stoppages, but there's a point where continuing is simply no longer good for anything, except of course to satisfy people like Zak's blood lust.
Zakman, I assumed you were being sarcastic, now I'm not so sure. That video is among the most disturbing boxing vids I've ever seen, it made my eyes swell up seeing a defenseless, unconscious man continue to be beaten. If you are serious about your comment, I hope you end up in a mental hospital, and far the hell away from me or any boxing arena. Alternatively, someone should kick the **** out of you mercilessly, then you can feel the pain those guys go through and re-consider your stance.
Not only that - If they put in a performance like that - Don't REWARD them by giving them yet more fights like what happened with Cortez last year...
I'm not going to partake in this circle jerk. Zak mate, I get what you're on about. Calzaghe-Manfredo type stoppages are bull****. But seeing a fighter beaten into a coma isn't what I'd pay to see.
Jesus Zak did you want to see Rivera die? He was taking bombs and had no chance what so ever. I haven't been watching boxing long, about 5 years and I have already seen two guys collapse after a fight and need brain surgery to relieve presure on their brain from taking a severe beating. I'm all for hard fights but if you want unecessary brutality you should hook up with Michael Vick and get down on some dog fighting.
