WBO: Cotto can be forced to stake his belt

EVEN IF MIGUEL COTTO DOESN’T want to, he’d likely be forced to stake his World Boxing Organization welterweight belt against Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

This was the opinion of WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, who’s batting for the megabuck bout to be a title fight.
In a talk with Dr. Allan Recto of Philboxing on Tuesday, Valcarcel noted that the first thing Pacquiao needs to do is write the WBO a letter requesting that he and Cotto fight for the title and then tell chief promoter Bob Arum to inform the WBO about it.

Together, they can pressure Cotto to stake his title even if the fight is going to be at a catch weight of 145 lb.

Valcarcel also said in a separate interview with Jose Manuel Martino of Boxeo Mundial that

Pac's willing to pay for the fee, so why not? I think Cotto could demand the weight limit to go up to 147 though.

Well yes . . . I have no problem with that . . . the two parties should negotiate and fixed the contract.

Bottom line what I have posted earllier is true . . . Cotto might end up getting stripped of the title.

Its not anything to do with Cotto not wanting to pay the 150k... The millions he is gona get for this fight is gona make that look like chump change.

Arum wants the WBO as a back up of Cotto were to lose. Arum doesnt seem to realise that as he lost his WBA title to Margo who then lost to Mosely, his WBO title doesnt mean that much anyway, him losing to Pac and staying 'world champ' would be even more ridiculous.

Its in the WBOs best interests to have their title on the line in this fight.

Being greedy now could cost them in the long run...SEE WBC(Jones, rocco, Nunn situation). Chasing big fees almost bankrupted the greedy ****s. The WBO is going down a dark road.

Being greedy is the pipeline of existence of all Boxing Organizations. No money in circulation and they will all cease to exist.

to be honest who really cares

whether that "title" is up for grabs or not is not gonna make one more person buy the fight who wouldn't have otherwise ("oh man the wbo belt is at stake, i wasn't gonna buy this fight before but now i definitely am!!!")

drop the belt cotto. pay the 150 grand and tell them to f*ck off. That way if Pac really wants the WBO, he'll have to fight someone else at a legit 147 for a 147 belt.

It could backfire should the fight fall apart and then Pac fights somebody for the vacant WBO which would be......floyd mayweather.

If it's Mayweather then good . . . I won't call that backfire. Pac can then drop the Cotto fight and fight PBF instead.

Only question is . . . how and when will Mayweather become the WBO Champ?

If this is a title fight then Cotto should be allowed to weigh in @147 , however Roach will not agree to that or it would of been set at that weight from the beginning .

If Cotto is stripped of his title maybe thats for the better that the way if Cotto loses he has no belt to keep hold of which makes the whole thing a bit less pharsical , anyhow should Cotto lose he will probably still be ranked #1 by the WBO anyway (and probably the other organisations too) and will walk into a title fight shortly after . Ala Michael Jennings post Margarito .

From a Pacquiao point of view if Pac wanted to fight for a WBO strap there would of been no talk of a catch weight and he would of been officially fighting @147 against Cotto .

The title should only be on the line if the fight is at 147. After all it's a Welterweight belt...not a catchweight belt.

^^^ there's actually no rules that it should be @ 147... WW is 141-147.
but IMO cotto should have the right to demand for a 147lbs limit coz he's the one being challenged for the title.
