Seriously. To me this would be as close to a mirror image of Hearns-Margarito as we could get. Hitman up against an opponent who doesn't stop coming forward, incredibly persistent and an unrelenting volume puncher with an incredible chin just like Marg. He showed he knew how to neutralize that kind of forward force and made that chin not look so iron. He also barely survived this guy's nonstop assault. Roldan is Margarito's uncle... Hearns-Roldan, Rounds 1 & 2 Hearns-Roldan, Rounds 3 & 4 Am I wrong...
:yep You're right. But also remember Margorito is much slower than Roldan. I can envision Hearns busting up Margo much quicker. :yep BTW, thanks for posting this clip.
You're right, it could be like Hearns vs. Barkley. . . . . . . . . . . . Except this time around Margarito won't come up with a hayemaker like Barkley did and get knocked out after getting brutalized in the first few rounds, just like Barkley. :deal
Great fight while it lasted. And Marg is slower AND smaller than Roldan. Plus that fight was at middlewieght, at 147 Hearns might have sent Marg's steel dome in to orbit.
That's definititely a possibility. Not to disrepect Hearns as he had one of the best right hands in the history of the sport. However, Margarito is a huge WW who does have a better chin than Roldan being the bigger man. Plus he is capable of hurting hearns and we all know that Hearns never knew how to survive when he was hurt. It cold also be a hagler-hearns type battle at WW where Margarito weathers the storm and Hearns punches himself out. Don't forget Margarito has also has tremendous stamina to go with his chin. These outcomes may be unlikely against a master boxer-puncher like Hearns, but they are definitely a possibility.
Dont forget that Barkley also won a decision vs Hearns in their rematch. .....the pressure that Barkley put on Hearns to win that decision, is much like the pressure that Margarito brings. Honestly, at either 147 or 154, imo Hearns only chance would be to land a big shot and take Margarito out of there.....and that would have to come within the first 3 rounds when Margarito has'nt quite warmed up to the task...... This matchup would certainly not go to a decision, Hearns weak chin and lack of stamina would not survive the pressure of Margarito. I'd say Hearns real chance is an early KO victory at 154 lbs!
You're saying the WW Margarito has a better chin than the MW Rodan? Rodan was a beast, Hagler and Nunn had a great deal trouble with him. Tommy took his ass out in four. Hearns never knew how to survive when hurt? Did you just watch the fight Iceveins posted? How bout the Leonard rematch? Or the James Kinchen fight. Hearns not knowing how to survive when hurt is a myth. It happened early in his career against Leonard, but he learned from that. If Margarito gets himself in a Hagler-Hearns type battle with Hearns, the only one who'd be on the canvas is Margarito.
As inhuman as Margarito's chin is, I really don't think its better than Roldan's. You have to see some of his other fights, he's laughed at some hellacious bombs. The guy is from Argentina where their fighters have chin's like cement blocks. If you watch his fight against Hagler he ate some leather like you wouldn't believe. Roldan also has tremendous stamina, those type of persistent punchers normally do. And lets also not forget that Barkley was one of the biggest middleweights ever...guy had an enormous frame and fought at heavyweight at the end of his career. Thats a much different story than Hearns up against a big welterweight. Hearns himself was a huge welter. Hearns has a "lack of stamina"? The only time we seen Hearns lungs give out on him was in the 14th round against one of the greatest fighters of the era.
I honestly don't put much into the rematch Divac. Both fighters were past their best, and weren't at their best weight. Granted, both were coming off impressive victories, but to me that was their last hurrah, as well as a good styles matchup. I'd also say Hearns stamina is a non factor. To me, his weakness was more of his legs than stamina. They were like toothpicks, and that's why he usually gave out under pressure, because they would give out so easily. Don't worry, Hearns would make that early knockout chance against Margarito count. Margarito's so open in those first few rounds I find it almost impossible for Hearns not to take advantage.
Roldan compares better to Sebastian Lujan than he does Margarito. A short, stocky caveman who comes in like the a savage with his hands low winging big shots.
