Margarito has a ridiculous ability to take shots to the dome, and great stamina, but there's only so much you can take upstairs from a puncher like Tommy. That straight right hand was just devasating. While Margarito is not totally skill-less, he's levels below Hearns in skills, and his defense is porous. Margarito would hardly be the first guy with a good chin whom Tommy stopped. Hearns's other money punch besides the straight right hand was (like Cotto) the left hook to the body. Margarito did a good job of avoiding the body shots and taking the shots upstairs from Cotto, but I feel Hearns will catch Margarito with just too many hard shots.
I can see a slight resemblance to Lujan but I still say Roldan plays the same fiddle as Margarito. He does wing his shots but Margarito does also. Probably not as wide as Roldan but he's certainly no air tight puncher. Straight ahead, eat 3 to land 1, non-stop pressure, punches in numbers...He threw more bombs but has a style very similiar to Margarito.
Roldan gave Hearns lots of room though, in spots. Margarito doesn't really do that. Hearns best shot would be to knock Margarito out before he gets going. That seems the most likely scenario. If Margarito is allowed to get going and finds his range inside of Hearns' reach and really turns up the heat he could take Hearns out. Hearns remember wasn't all that durable either. I'm not sold on Hearns' right being a big factor as I think Margarito constantly charging forward takes a bit of steam off the right hand, like he did with Cintron. I think Hearns left hook would be a bigger factor. Especially when they fall in and Margarito tucks his elbows and brings the uppercuts inside. It's one of those fights Hearns would have to knock Tony out within 3-4 rounds before Tony finds his range. Yes I know Hearns is ATG, speed, power, but he also had a glass chin. And we still don't know how solid Margarito's chin is yet. By all measurements it is better than 99% of them out there. I am certain it is better than Roldan's was as well.
I love Tommy as much as the next. But his Chin/Power create's a what if...:deal (In all his This content is protected matches)
That fight was at MW against a much bigger, stronger, harder hitting opponent. Who, BTW, Hearns was dominating before getting caught by. Margarito is nothing like Barkley and the comparison is completely inept. Only someone like Ambition_Def would use a comparison like that.
Anyone with any knowledge of Whitaker knows he was past his prime by the mid 90's. The only thing laughable is you attempting to discredit it. You're really not too bright, are you?
Don't have one really. Off the top of my head I'd say Hearns does get to him sometime in 4, but not from the right. From the left hook. Hearns did have pretty good handspeed and size. I think it'd give Margarito some trouble. But again, if Margarito made it into his comfort zone Hearns might well be ****ed.
1996, the year Whitaker turned 32, was the year in which Whitaker really started to show his decline. He won a world title at 154 in 1995 against Vasquez, and also dominated overmatched Jake Rodriguez later that year and I think beat Gary Jacobs (haven't seen that fight in ages), but looked awful in 1996 against Wilfredo Rivera and arguably lost. He fought better in the rematch, but his decline in those 2 fights and the bout with Hurtado was pretty clear.
Did you see how many times Hearns was hit clean by a puncher in that bout just posted? He sure seemed to deal with it fine there. That doesn't strike me as glass.
