The fight lasted as long aas it did because Cotto ran. If he would have stood in front of Margorito more often he would have taken more punishment sooner. And as far as who was punching harder, I'd say Cotto was landing clean punches but Margorito was clearly doing more damage with his shots. He just kept applying more and more damage until Cotto couldn't go on. To me that is the definition of effective punching not what the punch visibly looks like. It's what is the result of the punch. Cotto could land a great looking clean left hook but if Margarito doesn't flinch then that punch wasn't very effective than was it. And That NUTHUGGER Lampley, who always gets it wrong btw, doesn't seem to grasp this concept. All night long in between rounds and during the action it was almost like Lampley was trying to spin the fight in Cottos direction or down play any of the damage the Margorito was causing. I'll tell you what this fight reminded me of Chaves Taylor I. With Taylor landing cleaner shots and winning rounds but doing little damage and Chavez punishing Taylor all night long with hard punches that stayed with him. After the fight Margorito said he heard Cotto winching when he was hitting him. That drives a fighter on as opposed to what Cotto was doing, hitting him with everything he had and causing no damage, that takes the spirit from a fighter. I belive iof they fight again that the result will be the same or maybe even quicker becauswe Cotto has lost his vail of invincibility and he will never forget how he hit Margorito with everything he had and couldn't hurt him. It will be interesting to see how this effects Cotto moving forward.
I'm not saying idiotically coming forward against the pressure guy. If he had it would be the same as trinidad v Vargas, ktfo. But he needed to pick his spots to stand his ground and come forward. Throughout the whole fight he was throwing his shots INBETWEEN margo's punches. That is because, he was the smaller man and was backing up. So Margo was in range to throw punches before Cotto. The few times he was the first to throw combo's and power shots, he caused Margo to cover up. I think your right that the result of the punch is most important. But -- if there ends up being no knock out, then the importance lies on what the punch looks like, because it is being judged. And thank you for bringing Chavez- Taylor up. Cotto needed to do an impersanation of Taylor (with not QUITE as much reckless brawling.). Taylor stood his ground frequently (a little more frequently then should have), but he mixed it up with boxing at times. He was in complete control of the tempo until the end. He was hurt and he got gassed, his chin was not as good as Chavez's but he dominated this pressure fighter. Everyone knows how the fight should have ended, with a Taylor win.
I actually think Chavez Taylor I was a good stoppage b/c of all the punishment that Taylor had taken uip to that point. It is not the job of the ref to know how much time is left in the fight, it's his job to watch the fighters and judge weahter they can continue to fight or not. Taylor really had nothing left at that point. Last night Cotto was in even worse shape than Taylor was. He was landing clean looking punches but he was being hurt with more effective punches from Margorito from about round 2 on. Margorito hurt him in the 7th and 10th rounds and at no time did Cotto look like he even phased Margorito. How do you think Lampley did calling the fight? It seems to me that he picks a favorite and rides them all fight long. He did it with Taylor vs Hopkins both times, he does it in every Calzage fight and he did it again last night. Cotto was hitting Margorito clean but that doesn't mean he was doing more damage. Margoritos punches were staying with Cotto and were breaking him down as the fight wore on. Emanuel Stewart had it right in the 2 rd that if the fight keeps going like this it will favor Margorito. Sometimes I wish Stewart would just lean over and tell Lampley "You have no clue as to what you are talking about, just sit there and watch maybe you'll learn someting." But then again he's been doing this long enough if he were going to learn something he probably would have done so by now.
I rarely pay attention to the announcers. Just a distraction. But it sounds like you've internalized some crap from ESPN classic. Taylor-Chavez should have gone to court for armed robbery.
.. with 2 seconds left he was going to be killed, surely. So taking away his certain rightful victory for his superior effort was the right thing to do. That makes sense.
Another idiot who can't accept his boy lost. Cotto got his ass KICKED. End of story. Your little hypothesis is weak. Viva Mexicoooooo!!!!!!
He fought the right fight just not as well as he could have. Cotto won the exchanges on the backfoot. Marg has the better chin and throws relentlessly so why would you try to engage as much as possible knowing Marg will be there but you could get hurt and possibly stopped? I think stamina lost Cotto the fight. He chances of winning were to pot shot his way to a UD. It may not make all the fans happy but it will get you the win, keep you on your feet and allow you to actually inflict more damage on your opponent. Cotto is just not the boxer that Floyd is so he doesn't have the skills to make it look easy and not get hit for 12 rounds...
Exactly. No one is saying that he should try to beat Margo at his own game. But this boy ain't Mayweather like you said, He NEEDs to mix in aggression and some pressure. He was catching Margo in between shots, but that was not good enough, he needed to put some pressure on him as well. Again, not go to war with him, but he did that opposite extreme of that, He NEVER took it to Margo throughout the whole fight.
2 seconds is time enough for chavez to land 1 straight right to the head that would kill him. the guy lost 2 pints of blood, needed 43 stitches to close the rips inside his mouth, had the orbital bone on his face broken and was practically defenseless in the end. in your missguided opinion, steele should have gambled with this kids life and let him continue in the shape he was in even though steele had no way of knowing exactly how much time was left in the round. you dont know much about much, do you?
Damn your I guess your right, the ref is a hero for preventing his death that was guaranteed to have happened within those next two seconds. And with your smarts, and the ability to know exactly what will happen, I hope you are lending your uncanny services to the government in the search for Bin Laden *Edit* And I guess Steele's experience of having refereed hundreds of fights doesn't give him any sort of feel for how much time is left.
this whole post said absolutely nothing, junior. you sound like a little boy who has nothing intelligent to say so he goes off on some silly exageration of what is being disscussed. why dont you stick to replying to what is actually being said like a man instead of throwing yourself on the floor and holding your breath.
